Chuck Berry was one of the few early rock-n-rollers that figured out how to beat the system that screwed so many others, including Little Richard and Bo Diddley.

Berry refused to sell the rights to his music, and found it more profitable to drop the backup band. Instead, he’d set up the tour, scout out and hire local bands.

A young Bruce Springsteen was one of them (before BS got famous on his own). He asked Berry what they were going to play for the show. Berry dryly responded, “We’re going to play Chuck Berry music.”
