kdub– The related tragedy turned out to be a freak accident (updated with link above.) I checked Mythbusters, didn’t find anything. Link?

This is the best I could find:
They originally didn’t think it was possible for a bystander, or the shooter, to get hurt or killed by a bullet falling back to Earth after being fired up in the air, but obviously it is.

kdub– People get killed every year around here from idiots shooting guns in the air on New Year’s eve. Mythbusters was testing a different theory, that a bullet fired straight up will come straight down. In a vacuum it would.
When I was a kid, I shot a bb gun straight up in the air to hear them hit in the ground around me. I realized my stupidity when a bb embedded itself in the top of the picnic table next to my elbow.
