The Most Popular Badge in Afghanistan

Sunday, 18 March 2012

With tensions at an all time high in Afghanistan following the Koran burnings, the urination video, and the killing of 16 civilians, attention is now falling on a long line of “Infidel” apparel and gear.

Exhausted from how they feel they’re being perceived, troops have taken to wearing patches and carrying items that label themselves infidels, and offer translation in local dialect.

In the Muslim world an infidel means literally “one without faith” who rejects the central teachings of Islam.

Military.com tracked down Clayton Montgomery at Mil-Spec Monkey, a large online seller of infidel gear, who says his most popular item by far is the “Pork Eating Crusader Patch.”

[Update: For those interested in reading an assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, Pete Hegseth, emailing from Kabul in January 2012, has some interesting (and disturbing) observations.

Pete Hegseth, founder of Vets For Freedom, is now posted to Afghanistan, where he has been training Afghans as well as American and coalition troops. His reports on the situation there are as knowledgeable as any you can find. Here is his final dispatch — long but worth reading through to the end.

It Made Me Laugh

Monday, 12 March 2012

A lot of things have been going down outside of Tacky Raccoons that I’m involved with, and that screencap made me laugh on a number of levels. (Yeah, it’s a screencap, not a photoshop. Click on it.)

After the untimely death of Andrew Breitbart, some of his close friends and co-workers decided to do a 24 hour dj marathon, via Twitter, consisting of songs that they liked. I came in late to the show, and found that @Liberty_Chick posted the Tubes’ “Mondo Bondage.” There was some funny convergence that popped up on the screen.

I can’t explain it all here, but it has to do with Andrew Breitbart, this, and some other things I am involved with elsewhere just for fun.

That .png image at top has so many built-in contradictions and subtle innuendo that I thought it was worth a post. If you get it, great – pass it on. If you don’t, we’ll have something entirely different tomorrow.

Cosmic Slop

“Space Traders” was produced by HBO films and is based on a short story writhed by Prof. Derrick Bell, Barack Obama’s Harvard Law professor. Big Hollywood: “Bell eventually resigned from Harvard in 1992, and continued to stir controversy. He wrote a short story, “The Space Traders,” in which he imagined that Americans would sell blacks to aliens in exchange for gold to repay the national debt. He also implied that Jews would help blacks only out of a sense of self-preservation, turning Holocaust victim and diarist Anne Frank into “the symbol of Jewish hypocrisy.””

And, yeah, that’s the head of George Clinton, Commander of The Mothership, presented for amusement purposes only.

R.I.P. Andrew Breitbart

Thursday, 1 March 2012

“Bunk! Andrew Breitbart’s on the phone!”

I had the pleasure of talking with Andrew on the phone a few times last summer. Good guy who is already missed.

Nice tribute from Iowahawk here.

Robert Stacy McCain has a good send off, as does longtime friend Michael Walsh.

Patterico‘s got one, too.

Andrew Breitbart exposed and publicized so much hypocrisy, egregious fraud, blatant governmental/bureaucratic corruption and malfeasance that one would think that he’d be a hero to all, regardless of one’s political affiliation, JUST FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING.

That he’s not recognized for those contributions by all is a travesty.

In October 2011, Andrew Breitbart called into a podcast aired by The Blogmocracy to talk about Charles Johnson. (Johnson was a once prominent blogger who decided to turn on many of his former friends and allies, Breitbart being one of them.) Here is a brief of what went down:

Everything leading up to that interview was pure awesome. Once The Boiler Room Crew had the archives of ALL of Charles Johnson’s comments on LGF, on a whim I emailed Breitbart to see if he was interested in them. He emailed back within minutes. “Call me.”

So I did. I told him about DoD and what the BRC had done, and he was laughing. A couple of phone calls and emails later, I mentioned the upcoming Blogmocracy Radio podcast and asked him if he’d like to call in to talk about CJ or anything else. He was interested.

The day of the show was nerve wracking. We couldn’t announce the “Special Guest” ahead of time without confirmation, so I emailed him just in case he’d changed his mind.

He responded with two words: “I’m in.”

At that point we went into promo mode, but we still couldn’t say who the “Guest” was going to be – we didn’t want the lizards clogging up the BlogMockRadio switchboard and giving m a bunch of crap.

If you listen to the first few minutes of the show [full unedited archive here] you can tell that Savage and Rodan were nervous, not knowing if and when Andrew would call in. Once he did, it was a blast.

Thanks Andrew.

STOP SOPA / PIPA

Thursday, 19 January 2012

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Just think.

If the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) were to pass, this post could cause Tacky Raccoons to be taken down with a single complaint.

The complaint could be made by one of the pet owners, the person who created any one of the images, the company that printed the calendars where the images were featured, any website that sold those calendars, and any individual claiming ownership of the pictures, whether the claims were legit or not.

Every website that posted any image could be accused and shut down, whether guilty of copyright infringement or not. Google itself could be in violation, because they linked to the images where we lifted them, which is aiding and abetting.

The U.S. Government has been trying to figure out ways to control the internest for a long time, especially for taxation purposes, but this latest power grab (by a bipartisan commission!) is beyond insidious. James Watt takes it a step further:

SOPA/PIPA is not the way of free speech, nor is it going to help the exchange of ideas. It will hurt science just as much as any other venue to protect a few media conglomerates. SOPA and PIPA is a real danger to all of us who frequent websites such as this one. Imagine if you will, we are discussing the new HadCRUT4 using station data – a complaint is lodged by UEA/CRU to the SOPA/PIPA entity over some portion of that dataset they consider “proprietary” or protected by one of the non disclosure agreements they claim to have with some countries. One complaint is all it would take to shut WUWT, Climate Audit, and other websites using this data for discussion down- without any hearing or trial. Basically, “fair use” gets tossed down the hole. Science loses.

Freedom of Speech is one of the unalienable rights of citizens of this great country. Let’s make sure it’s never taken away, because we’ll never get it back.

Saturday Matinee – Home Movies, Cold Water, Fabulous Thunderbirds & Zappa’s Black Napkins

Saturday, 7 January 2012

Home movies – the Directors’ analysis.

Very cold water is very dense. Fishing in a frozen lake in Finland. Here’s an explanation [via]:

They have inflated their BCDs (vests) with air. This will make them float up to the ‘top’. This allows them to stand on the ice upside down. If there was no ice, they would surface. You can see when they breathe, the CO2 will float to the top (bottom) of the ice and it trapped. The wheel barrow is filled with CO2 expelled (poured in from the bucket). This makes it want to float too and hence will stick to the bottom of the ice until they dump it out, which will make it loose its buoyancy and sink to the bottom…

Happy birthday to Kim Wilson, one of the greatest blues harp blowers. Saw him with his original lineup in the early 80′s, pre-  Kid Ramos. Pure awesome then, pure awesome now. And just for the helluvit, here’ my favorite Zappa song to wrap it all up, “Black Napkins.”

Yeah, I may have posted that before, but so what – I like it. Have a great weekend, folks, be back here tomorrow for more fun and games.
