Post 2K! WooHoo!

Wednesday, 30 May 2012

This is the 2,000th post on Tacky Raccoons.

Just think of all the time I could have been doing something more productive than shirking my responsibilites. On the other hand, this blog has given me much enjoyment over the years because every post was the result of a trek, an internet safari to look for and post oddities that amuse me, or at least hold my attention for more than a few seconds.

It has had it’s benefits. I’ve learned about image manipulation and editing, .gif animations, and that there are some sites out there that no one should visit. I’ve also “met” people from all over the world.

One thing that’s always puzzled me is what generates traffic. Sure, putting up a post titled “Lesbian Amputee Dwarf Porn” got a lot of hits  (it’s No. 15 on the list of most popular) but those who are really looking for it won’t find it here. With very few exceptions,  I’m still running on Anita Bath’s blogging Rule No. 1: Don’t post anything that will cause a Pastor to block the site from viewing by his 12 year-old daughter.

In case you’re curious, here are the Top Five posts that garnered the most attention since we started in 2007:

No. 1 – Another Great Christmas Gift Idea

No. 2 – LOL FERRET: Episode 1

No. 3 – Um, Nice Stained Glass?

No. 4 – Capybara Lapwarmer

No. 5 – Batmobile Babe Magnet

Are those the best posts of Tacky Raccoons? Not in my opinion, but who cares. I’m having fun, and I hope you are, too.

Nice To Have You Here

Sunday, 29 April 2012

Running a “Hey Lookit This” blog is fun. One of the things that amuses me is trying to figure out what’s hot and what’s not, and occasionally I look at the search engine terms that brought people to Tacky Raccoons in the first place. I might as well share the fun.

In the past year, we got a lot of hits for .gif animations. That’s unsurprising because over time we’ve collected a nice archive. Here are the top ten search engine terms April 2011 – April 2012:

  1. Capybara  (23K+ hits)
  2. Dancing gif  (21K+)
  3. Possum  (13K+)
  4. 10 (9.5K)
  5. 11 (3K)
  6. Animation Fist Pump (3K)
  7. Science Fair Projects (2K)
  8. Motivational Poster (2K)
  9. Babe (2K)
  10. Woolly Bear Caterpillar (2K)

There are variations to each category, like plurals, additional words, misspellings, etc., so the number of hits are approximate – but those are by far the most popular, with thousands of hits each. Why so many people search for the numbers 10 and 11, and not other numbers is a binary mystery to me.

The rest is a hodgepodge of pure eclectic bizarreness. These are headscratchers, in order of rank:

Meatloaf, Stairs, Chainsaw Bear, Raccoons Killing Cats, Oops, Donut Queen, Slugman, Dwarf Porn, Male Anorexia, Camel Planking, Bunny Poop, Bitch, Mickey Mouse Pants, Amputee Porn, Velcro Microscope, Bubble Butt Animated Gifs, Harold Hamgravy, Body Paint Ass, Aunt Bethany and Nose Harp.

Exactly 60 people came to this website by searching for:

these little beasties are street legal. they run on either kawasaki or honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we’ve seen in too long. there are seven of these little monsters floating around california, and they’re all the creation of one man, tom wright

Go figure.

Another Great Gift Idea: Pure Class

Tuesday, 23 November 2010

[For the sake of anonymity, we've blunked out the eyes in a very amateurish fashion so you don't accuse us of photoshopoopage... and no, that's not me.]

Let’s compare these two photos.

The guy on the left is despondent, bummed out about everything in his miserable little life. Stuck with a wardrobe full of green and gray, the person who took the photo had such little respect for him that she deliberately offset the negative karma with her thumb.

Contrast that with the photo on the right.

The guy on the right is obviously very successful and satisfied with his lot in life, and enjoys it immensely. And he has an adult beverage camouflaged as coffee when it’s intuitively obvious to the casual observer that it’s a cup full o’ jack.

Why are we posting such an incredible story of success here? Because you too can become successful, and it’s also the start of the holiday season.

Click on either of the images above and they’ll take you to a CafePress store where you can purchase lots of wonderful things. We don’t make any money on the sales, but a percentage of the sales price goes directly to charity.

When you place your orders, tell Christopher Y. that Bunk sent you, and I bet you’ll get a discount.

If you don’t see what you want, lemme know in the comments and we’ll respond. If  you need a custom design, we can do it with short notice.

And there was something else I was gonna say about being an amateur blogwhore, but I lost my train of thought…

[Update-- Czech out Amy's Store, too.]

1,292 Posts = 3rd Year Blogoversary!

Tuesday, 3 August 2010

Wow. Didn’t think we’d still be around this long. Mostly, we didn’t think at all, just got up did it, starting on 3 August 2007, and we’ve since passed 671,000 views!

The year certainly had its highlights. We had our busiest day, 18 October 2009, with over 20,500 hits. I was invited to post on both AmyOops and The Blogmocracy. Amy’s site is kind of a cornocopia of oddness, and The Blogmocracy is more about current events where I provide innocuous fodder for the Overnight Open Thread. It’s all a lot of fun.

We opened up The Tacky Raccoons Store for TR paraphernalia. Our new FaceBook page was hacked and deleted, but it’ll be up again soon. Thanks to all who logged in.

This post is a retrospective of our past year, listing the Top 10 greatest hits of Tacky Raccoons from August 2009 to August 2010. Previous years’ greatest hits are here and here.

So here are the Top 10 of the past twelve months, with last year’s rankings separated by an appropriate slash. NR = no rating,  indicating that the post either didn’t make rank or wasn’t posted last year. Click on the images to see the original posts.

Tracking Balloons_VE 090817

VE has been posting parodies of  sites on his blogroll, and today is our roasting.   More here.

Other news:  The computer at TR Headquarters threw a fit over the weekend, and I spent most of Saturday trying every trick in the toolbox, occasionally getting it to boot without crashing, only to have it crash again. No virus detected, and resetting the system worked only temporarily.

Yesterday I took it into the hospital. I’m hoping that it’s nothing worse than a failed power supply.

[Update:  The hospital called a while a go.  Corrupted sectors on the hard drive.  We're talking reformat city. Crap.]
