Hapa Haole Hula Girl (My Honolulu Hula Girl), Alfred Apaka with Danny Stewart’s Hawaiians (1951) Decca Records “Alfred Aloha Apaka (1919–1960) was one of the influential performers in the history of Hawaii’s popular music. Although he recorded for less than a decade, Apaka set the standards for modern Hawaiian music with his joyful, baritone vocals and highly entertaining performances.” (BTW, “hapa haole” doesn’t translate to “Honolulu,” and is also a style of music.)

That’s one you need to practice so you can rattle it off in conversation, like “polyiso cyanurate.”

Haha, wouldn’t that be great! 🙂 🙂

I wasn’t kidding.
Rattling off “polyisocyanurate” in front of a contractor produced a deer-in-the-headlights look. We were discussing high-R-value insulation boards.
Not sure when I’ll be talking to someone about the State Fish of Hawai’i, but I’m ready. 😀

You won’t believe what is hung in bathroom. I thought that reef fish sounded so familiar, only to realize it was in my bathroom the whole time.

Looks like the link you posted is from the WordPress block editor (that I despise – I revert to “classic editor”) and the photo hasn’t been posted yet.

See, I am hopeless with computers, and I don’t even understand the difference between block and classic, but thanks for pointing that out. You have given me an excuse to learn these things.

Ms. Dedeng – You’ll be fine. WordPress can be a bit tricky, but it allows more options than some of the other blogging platforms. I have no idea how to use the WP block editor, and a lot of users hate it.

Unfortunately I can’t attach the picture, don’t know how.
My mother-law is hawaiian, so she framed the reef fish with its hawaiian name. It hangs in my bathroom.

That’s the least frenetic version of that song I’ve heard. I’m rather partial to the recording by the Sweet Hollywaiians, but besides being faster, they’re also Japanese, so the lyrics are much less intelligible.
You missed a bet, though. The humuhumunukunukuapua’a is actually included in the lyrics of My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua, Hawaii. I’ve always thought that its alternate name, the Picasso triggerfish, was also pretty cool.

Wheels– Good trivia, that. I was looking for some semi-obscure music to post, opened a box of my late dad’s cds and found Alfred Apaka. No idea why he had it unless it reminded him of tiki parties of long ago.

My dad’s CDs were mostly things like Marty Robbins, Dottie West, and other country music of similar vintage, along with 40’s jazz and big band collections.
His LPs were more varied, and included Mantovani, Jackie Gleason, Elvis, Gogi Grant, and 101 Strings.

My dad had eclectic tastes, from big bands to modern jazz to pop and rock. He had more Aerosmith albums than I did.

One of my friends, shortly after my college days, told me that I had “packrat taste in music.”
I’ve got just about everything except rap and opera. One of the stranger CDs I own is a bunch of Elvis covers sung in Latin.
