Erin Go Bleaugh & Póg Mo Thóin

There’s a county map to go on the wall,
A hurling stick & a shinty ball,
The bric, the brac, the craic & all,
Lets call it an Irish pub.

Caffreys, Harp, Kilkenny on tap,
The Guinness pie & that cabbage crap,
The ideal wannabee Paddy trap,
We’ll call it an Irish pub.

The Rumjacks‘ “An Irish Pub Song” is “a piss take at the explosion of Irish Pubs in Australia and the bastardisation of a culture.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day

  1. …love love love The Rumjacks! You might be interested in ‘The Peelers’, they’re a local Celtic-Punk band featuring a few friends of mine. They started ten-years before the Rumjacks. These are some quotes from Celtic-Punk scene magazines from Europe and the US:

    “Celtic Punk royalty…”
“‘Palace Of The Fiend’ was an absolute masterpiece, one of the best Celtic-punk albums ever made…”
“The Peelers are a Living Legend”
“…up there with the best in Celtic-Punk history.”
“The best band in the whole Celtic-Punk universe.”

Their Bio will tell you they’re from ‘North Glengarry, Ontario’, which is one of the first & oldest Scottish and Irish settlements in North America but… they were actually formed in Vankleek Hill, which is just down the road, but we’re actually a Dutch / English / French settlement. Over the past 25-years they’ve toured NA, Europe, and Canada with the Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Stiff Little Fingers, The Real McKenzies, The Tossers, The Planet Smashers, Lagwagon, The Trews, Ashley MacIsaac (definitely check out Ashley as well) and more.

    …anyway, check it out:

    1. I’d heard OF The Peelers but never got around to checking them out. – that vid is a good ‘un, and your personal connection with them makes it even better. I’m not familiar with the last five bands you mentioned, but I’ll check them out.

There was a local Irish band that played a lot of small venues, one within walking distance of our house, and in the early 1990s were regulars at the annual fair/fundraiser at the school my kids attended. The Fenians went on to have a successful career, with several records and US & Ireland tours. They were fun. I spoke with them a few times, tried to get them to do a version of Nell Flaherty’s Drake (with the complete lyrics) but they never did. Too bad, they could have had a lot of fun “enhancing” the spite lyrics.
