I grew up in the midwest, and I remember mowing the grass during a big emergence. They were attracted to the noise of the lawn mower and I was covered with them. My sisters collected the shells and used them as barrettes.

I ain’t seen nearly as many cicadas this year so far. I usually catch them for fish bait & to feed my Box Turtles, I don’t think I’ve found a dozen yet.

Couple decades ago we took the kids to see the Grand Canyon, and while we were standing under the trees I could hear cicadas but they weren’t loud . A docent said they were a smaller variety than the eastern buggers and they were way up in the trees. He also said the light mist I felt was cicada shit.
