Saw a comment somewhere that suggested an old man version. He could wander off topic with war stories and his trouble getting tractor parts..
I had a pre-caller ID dealie that hooked up to the phone line. All it did was sound a brief computer tone when I picked up the receiver. If it was a telemarketer, his autodialer would hang up automatically and go to the next phone number in queue.

Years ago, my roommate and I at one point got so many spam calls that we changed our outgoing answering machine (yes, it was an actual machine) message to dial up noises. Worked like a charm.
