Saturday Matinee – Bruce, TXT, Robin, John Lee, and Elevators

by

Bruce Lee plays pingpong with nunchuck.  Awesome.

TXT Island, found at ZanyPickle.

Okay.  Back to the basics.  Here’s Robin Trower‘s “Too Rolling Stoned” from 1975.  There was a blues revival going on back then, but it was overshadowed by theatrical rock.

I was gonna jump to George Thorogood‘s classic cover of “One Bourbon…” but thought I’d look for John Lee Hooker‘s original. Found several on the Utoobage, until this jumped up:  “Hobo Blues” from 1965.  Judging by his odd fingerings, he’s got his guitar tuned to Dmajor, but that’s just a guess. (Hooker always looked to me like he’d been popped in both eyes during a bar fight.)

Since Friday the Thirteenth comes on a Saturday this month, here’s The 13th Floor Elevators, 1966.

    love the bruce lee video

    nursem– I don’t think that’s a doctored video either.

If memory serves, I recall that Amarillo Slim did something similar. He practiced with a metal folding chair before he made the bet, and won. Another story was that he worked at ping pong using a green glass CocaCola bottle, won that bet, too.

Whether that’s true or not, Amarillo Slim was no Bruce Lee. And vice-versa.

Bruce was awesome. The name escapes me and I’m too lazy to look it up, but there was a guy who bet Bing Crosby he could beat him at golf playing with a rake, a hoe and a shovel. He birdied the first hole and Crosby quit.

Robin was always a favorite. Saw him in a great venue, sitting at a table 10 feet from the stage, in about ’93. Still great. Although I never liked maple necks, I always go with the rosewood, rather not play on varnish.

John Lee–the Boogie Man. I wrote an obit for him, front page–as it should have been.

BTW, don’t you love me anymore? Who bumped me from the blogroll?

  5. Bunk Strutts Says:

    cbull–

“All of you mothers better lock up yer daughters, ’cause the Boogie Man’s in town.”

I thought that song was Freddie King’s. Where’s your obit for the Boogie Man? I’d love to read it.

We run by Anita Bath’s Rule No. 1: “Don’t post anything that would cause my Pastor to block the site from his 12 year-old daughter.”

For me, that goes for blogroll links, too. I don’t recall putting you on the blogroll, due to the T&A factor, but I don’t strip your website link from your comments anymore either. There are several sites I’d like to link to, including yours, but won’t due to Anita’s Rule No. 1.

Your other posts are excellent. Hope you understand. I’ll bring it up for consideration at the next shareholders’ meeting on the 21st.

    Your Pal,
    Bunk

Can’t verify this, and it doesn’t appear on the Snopes radar either: The Bing Crosby Bet.

  7. cbullitt Says:

Well thanks for the explanation of Anita’s rule.
Yeah, Montague was the guy. There’s a book about him–all around hustler–somewhere that came out in the last 10 years. Actually it may have been about who he really was. I’ll look later.
