That’s the version of “You Didn’t Try To Call Me” from the Mothers Of Invention’s third album “Cruisin’ With Ruben and the Jets”. Here’s the original from “Freak Out”:
I really love both albums. A radio station here in the Pittsburgh area used to play a song by the Mothers back in the late 60s called “I’m Not Satisfied” that gave me chills. I ran out to get it and saw that it was on
Freak Out”. Went home and played it, but it was a completely different version of that tune. Played the rest of the album though and was blown away. Found out later that the version I wanted was on “Ruben and the Jets”. I really got into the Mothers and Zappa…..

Taminator– You’re absolutely correct, and I thought of Ruben & the Jets at the last minute when I heard Flo & Eddie doing background vocals. They weren’t with Zappa when Freakout came out. Dang, now I have to post a correction!

There was another band with the name Ruben & The Jets. IIRC, they asked FZ if they could record under that name, and he brought them into Studio Z.

Nice! Reminds me of FZ’s greaser tune from “Ruben & the Jets”………

L.A. Chicano R&B is great, and there’s a resurgence that’s been going on for a while. Check out Joey Quinones, Thee Sinseers, The Altons & Adriana Flores.
