Saturday Matinee – Ghost Hounds, Dom Martin, Cuban Heels & ZZ TOP

Ghost Hounds are a classic rock ‘n’ blues band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, fronted by singer, songwriter (and motivational speaker) Tré Nation.

Dom Martin was playing for free in pubs in and around Belfast, Northern Ireland, when he was “discovered” playing at a golf club by someone with indirect connections to the music industry. That was 2017, and since then he’s released four records, has won numerous UK Blues Awards, and was introduced into the UK Blues Hall of Fame.

Not to be confused with the Scottish new wave band of the same name, Cuban Heels formed in the late 1980s in the Netherlands. The band was popular at blues festivals around Europe, playing garage blues mixed with soul / gospel flavors. Inspirations cited include Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, The Red Devils, (and more recently) The Black Keys, North Mississippi All Stars and Tom Waits. They are presently on hiatus.

One of the greatest blues rock trios in history, ZZ Top lost a second one. R.I.P. Frank Beard.

News of the Week: SCOTUS ruled that the WH Ballroom construction continue; Prince Harry & Duchess Meghan are moving back to the UK; Hurricane Lala tore through Hawaii and more tropical storms are on the way. Haitians are being deported en masse for being jerks, and Sacramento jerks want to ban 70% of tires because of friction.
Tomorrow we’ll discuss paint and dogs, on the porch, at porch time o’clock. Be there.

Saturday Matinee – Fatboy Slim, Lucky Chops, Tom Mansi & the Icebreakers, and Big Monti Amundson

Not my favorite musical style, but the video amused me.
Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, specializes in big beat / techno / dj rock. In 2008 he reportedly held the Guinness World Record for most top-40 hits under different names.

Formed in 2016, Lucky Chops began as a group of subway buskers from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, New York City, and now they perform world-wide. Reminds me of New Orleans second line parades.

Tom Mansi & the Icebreakers kick rockabilly in the UK. Can’t find details about the group other than their own description: “Rock n roll blues alternative originals 3piece fronted by howling doublebass player with drums and guitar.

Big Monti Amundson backed by Bart Kamp / bass and Henk Punter / drums. Amundson definitely has the Texas blues sound down. I hear Jimmy Vaughan / Fabulous Thunderbirds, others compare him to SRV.
(More about Amundson on WikiP, but be careful with his website – Malwarebytes flagged a trojan.)

Wrapping up what for many is a four-day weekend what with the 4th landing on a Thursday and all. Hope you still have all the fingers you started out with, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow whenever the porch wakes up.

Saturday Matinee – The King Khan & BBQ Show, Scone Cash Players & Clutch

[–insert nervous laughter here–]
The King Khan & BBQ Show features King Khan and BBQ.

Scone Cash Players is a Miami based funk jazz group led by Adam Scone on the Hammond B3. Scone is an Ohio native, and the accompanying video may (or may not) be a hat tip to the steel industry surrounding Youngstown.

Clutch grinds another one.

Past week so hot I was forced to dig out my official Steve Irwin Crikey Shorts, hose myself down and sit for hours in front of the Vornado. Thankfully, tropical storm Kay showed up and blew out the heat.  I’d forgotten how nice it is just to stand in the rain – and listen.

Have a great weekend. Tomorrow we’ll mess with stuff.
