Saturday Matinee – Gillian Hills, Delbert McClinton, The J. Geils Band & Bobby Womack

“‘Tut Tut Tut Tut’ is indeed the Franco-phonetic way of imitating a busy signal. In the course of this two minute song, Hills huffs 7 TUTs in a row, four different times for a total of 28 TUTS. Then she adds another 15 or 20 during the fade. Who doesn’t love her TUTS?”

The song is featured in the 2020 TV miniseries “Queen’s Gambit” starring Anya Taylor-Joy, but Gillian Hills recorded “Tut Tut Tut Tut” in 1960, featured in the movie Beat Girl. An English version, Busy Signal was recorded by The Lollipops in 1965.

“McClinton sounds EXACTLY like Peter Wolf!” – video comment

Delbert McClinton is the sound of Texas soul, and has the credentials, backing the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson II, Howlin’ Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Jimmy Reed. Eventually he had a national hit, playing harmonica on Bruce Channel‘s “Hey! Baby” in 1962.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, Bobby Womack was slowing down by the time of this 2013 performance, and he passed away the following year at age 70. He first recorded “Lookin’ For A Love” with his brothers as The Valentinos.

The J. Geils Band cranked that blues classic 180 degrees in 1970.

John Lee Hooker doubled down and reclaimed it in October 1992.

Saturday Matinee – Bovine Spring, Biergarten, Man In The Woods & James Cotton (1935-2017)

Vandaag was het weer groot feest bij boer Brandsma in Bolsward! Na 5 maanden mochten de koeien weer voor het eerst naar buiten!

We lost J. Geils recently, but I completely missed the news of one of the greatest harmonica players I ever heard. James Cotton (aka “Mr. SuperHarp”) passed away at the age of 81 on 16 March 2017 in Austin Texas. Cotton recorded “The Creeper” in 1968. It predates Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz‘ 1971 recording of “Whammer Jammer“, falsely accredited to “Juke Joint Jimmy”.

Saturday Matinee – The Growlers, Leo Bud Welch & J. Geils

Did I post this before? I still like this song by The Growlers. It’s retro rock on many levels.

Leo “Bud” Welch is now into his eighties and only recently began his recording career. Here’s his website. Classic Delta blues mixed with the Chicago sound.

RIP John Geils.

That clip is from 1972 and features the classic J. Geils Band line up. I didn’t find out about those guys until a couple of years later when I got hooked on the sound and the fun. None of the players in his band stood out as heavy hitters individually, but as a group they kicked ass, with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, Peter Wolf and Seth Justman. They lost me in 1980 with their move to pop rock.

Saturday Matinee – The Specials, Seasick Steve & The J. Geils Band

The Specials live at PinkPop 28 May 2012.

Pinkpop Festival or PINKPOP is a large, annual music festival held at Landgraaf, the Netherlands. It is usually held on the Pentecost weekend (Pinksteren in Dutch, hence the name). —Wiki

With the exception of The Specials and Seasick Steve, most of the bands on that line up sucked big green donkeys, and I really tried to find one, just one, that didn’t suck big green donkeys.

Seasick Steve played the same day. Pure roots rock blues with homemade steel. The guy’s a killer, and he knew that the other bands (except for The Specials) sucked big green donkeys, too. But then there was that bar band fronted by someone named Bruce.

This bar band was way more fun.

Saturday Matinee – The Travelin’ McCoury’s, Muddy Waters & Buddy Guy / Robert Junior Lockwood / Koko Taylor / Charlie Musselwhite

Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys‘ “Pumped Up Kicks” made me laugh. Clever stuff that.

How ’bout some Muddy Waters? Here’s a jam from 1978. (Note that James Cotton is not the first harp blower on the vid.)

Killer blues tribute with a great lineup. 45 minutes of pure awesome.

The J. Geils Band was the Best Bar Band in the Land in the late 70s, and there’s proof. Need more? Check this out.

Saturday Matinee: You are a Fluke. OK Go. I Do.

Here’s a National Lampoon classic, Deteriorata, updated with a slide show. And since you were wondering, Bunk’s God is both a hairy thunderer AND a cosmic muffin.

Here at TR we like the Odd, the Unusual, and the unrecognizable green stuff in the back of the refrigerator that controls the light.

Once in a while the O and U both jump up to bite us in the crackerbockles when we least expect it. Miss Bunkessa Strutts found this gem, and while the song is not remarkable, the video is clever, as are the other videos seeping from the cranial orifices of the band known as “OK GO.”

Enough of that. Back in the middle of the plastic band war years, this one stood out. Here’s the J.Geils Band c.1983 doing a cover of the Marvelow‘s 1965 hit “I Do” with Peter Wolf and Magic Dick presiding. Hope you like it.
