Saturday Matinee – Bert The Turtle, Time for Sushi & Jaco Pastorious

Bert The Turtle showed children how to survive a nuclear attack – assuming they’re far enough away from Ground Zero to have time to react. The film was shown in schools from 1952 into the 1990s.

David Lewandowski‘s “Time for Sushi” (2017) is pure disturbed weirdness. (His 2013 vid “Late For Meeting” is a classic.)

The late Jaco Pastorius was one of the greatest jazz-funk fretless bass players in modern times, IMO. [Video h/t TITH]

Saturday Matinee – Carol Kaye, Tal Wilkenfeld & Jeff Beck, Jaco Pastorius, and Some Guys Jamming “Mercy Mercy Mercy.”

You’ve probably never heard OF Carol Kaye, but you have certainly heard her music, especially on bass. Pure awesome.

Jaco Pastorius was brilliant on bass, but had serious mental problems.

Mercy Mercy Mercy. This jam cranks, but that can’t be  Stanley Jordan on bass (or guitar, or any other instrument) despite the Utoobage description, yet someone was playing a 6-string bass…

Rufus Thomas‘ “Funky Chicken” live at WattStax 1972.

Jaco Pastorius‘ “The Chicken,” live in Montreal. Bob Mintzer-sax, Randy Brecker-trumpet, OthelloMolineaux-steel pans, Peter Erskine-drums, Charles “Don” Alias-percusion.

As talented as Pastorius was, he was diagnosed as bi-polar, and despite medications, lived on the streets for weeks at a time. He died in 1987 at age 35 from head injuries incurred during an altercation with a bouncer at a nightclub in Florida.

Saturday Matinee: Watchmen, Evil Rainbow Pollution, Weather Report

[Folks, I still got some computer glitches left over from earlier this week.  I had to go into safe mode just to uninstall Microdork’s Service Pack 3.  Unfortunately  the uninstall takes some stuff with it that affects FireFox as well as some other applications.  The computer was limping, now it’s walking. Tomorrow I hope to get it running again.  Guess I gotta buy more RAM.]

A friend “let” me read his cellophane-clad mint copies of the Watchmen twenty years ago. I was amazed at the level of artwork as well as the entire concept, but the final episode sucked donkeys big time.

Weather Report was way ahead of their time jazzbo wise, or maybe they hit it at just the right time in order to get my attention.  Jaco Pastorius was amazing.
