Saturday Matinee – Living On The ISS, Jaco Pastorius & Dick Dale

Saturday, 18 January 2014

How to do the basics (including doing Nos. 1 & 2) in zero gravity explained by  ISS Expedition 33 Commander Suni Williams [via].

Killer jazz fusion bass crankage featuring Jaco Pastorius. The vid clips don’t synch to the song, but so what.

Dick Dale‘s “Nitro” is a high speed ear barrage of classic awesome.

That’ll do for this week’s edition of the Saturday Matinee. Have a great weekend folks, and be back here tomorrow for a potpourri of fun links.

Saturday Matinee – WKYT’s Weather Report, Pastorius’ Weather Report, Waits’ Weather Report, Redbone’s Weather Report & Dale’s Weather Report

Tornado damage captured by security cams – scary stuff.

Weather Report was a breath of fresh air from the garbage that was being pumped out over the airwaves in the late 1970s. Although it is pure jazz-fusion, they initiated a resurgence of a nuanced genre based upon the substantial willingness of proper associative mindset awareness and shit. Jaco was great.

Meanwhile, Tom Waits was working the other end of the jazz resurgence spectrum as a hep-cat jazzbo 50s street poet.

Leon Redbone took the jazz resurgence in a completely different direction – right to it’s early American roots. “Diddy Wah Diddy” was a song by itself, complete with the requisite innuendo, but listen to the cornet solo. It’s a note-for-note copy of  King Oliver from 1926, “Sugar Foot Stomp.”

And for you babosos who don’t give a carp about weather, this vid of Dick Dale & The DelTones (ca. 1963) is supposedly a rare video of the King of Surf Guitar, but nothing is rare on the internest, and I dare you to name the dances. Double dog dare you.

Have a great weekend, folks. More stuff coming tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Ramsey Lewis Trio, Weather Report, Rickie Lee Jones, Southside Johnny, Procol Harem

Saturday, 20 November 2010

Ramsey Lewis [h/t Coldwarrior].

Weather Report was THE jazz-fusion band of the 1970s, and the late Jaco Pastorius was one of the greatest fretless bassmen, with all his awesome burping, farting and growling.

About the same time, I was in love with Rickie Lee Jones. She always reminded me of Diane W., but don’t tell the missus that.

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes was another favorite of mine back then.

The unwritten rule for posting videos is that one must post one, three or five for the karma to balance. So in order to keep things hunky and dory, here’s the fifth:

That’s Procol Harem from 1967, featuring the legendary Hammond B3 Organism.

Have a great weekend folks, and be back here tomorrow for more fun and games.

Saturday Matinee: Watchmen, Evil Rainbow Pollution, Weather Report

Saturday, 7 March 2009

[Folks, I still got some computer glitches left over from earlier this week.  I had to go into safe mode just to uninstall Microdork’s Service Pack 3.  Unfortunately  the uninstall takes some stuff with it that affects FireFox as well as some other applications.  The computer was limping, now it’s walking. Tomorrow I hope to get it running again.  Guess I gotta buy more RAM.]

A friend “let” me read his cellophane-clad mint copies of the Watchmen twenty years ago. I was amazed at the level of artwork as well as the entire concept, but the final episode sucked donkeys big time.
[Karen found and posted this here.]

This video reassures me that people like her are allowed to vote.  And really now, what is oozing out of our ground?

Weather Report was way ahead of their time jazzbo wise, or maybe they hit it at just the right time in order to get my attention.  Jaco Pastorius was amazing.
