Saturday Matinee – Rising Appalachia, Little Feat (w/ Lowell George), and Moreland & Arbuckle

Such a pretty sound. Rising Appalachia plays roots-based music righteously.

Moreland & Arbuckle were a trio consisting of Aaron Moreland on box guitar, Dustin Arbuckle on harp, Kendall Newby drums. Active from 2001-2017, they’re still performing, with different bands and lineups.

Gonna be a long hot (and probably loud) weekend given Independence Day on schedule for Tuesday. Don’t blow your wad of Black Cats too soon and we’ll see you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Taj Mahal & Etta James, Little Feat, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real

Little Feat  would hate to lose your lovin’.

Meanwhile, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (aka PTOR) had just about enough of the drama and decided to walk. Nelson & PTOR got off to a good start in 2008, opening for his dad, Willie, and now they back up Neil Young. They sound a bit like The Band to me, and that’s a good thing.

There’s a big storm coming, and I’m not talking about weather. Get your stuff in order and be back here tomorrow for no reason at all.

Saturday Matinee – Unknown Hinson, Little Feat & Alan Mirikitani

Those piqued my interest, so I dug further. Because I had to.

The Utoobage algorithm said I should check out Stuart Daniel Baker, aka Unknown Hinson, so I did. Don’t dismiss him. He’s got some serious guitar chops, and Ugly Things is the finest love ballad I’ve heard in hours. (Not only that, but the grandson of Hank Williams (Hank III) has an image of Unknown Hinson tattooed on his forearm.)

Little Feat was never easy to categorize, but this one’s kinda swampabilly with some big band thrown in.

Alan Mirikitani (1955-2015) was a classic bluesman from L.A., and fronted the band BB Chung King & The Screaming Buddaheads. Used to hear them on the radio, never got to see them live. He was in the recording studio when he died of a heart attack at the age of 60.

[Fun fact: Bassman Roy Estrada, one of the founders of the group, was also a founding member of Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, later played with Captain Beefheart. He’s not performing anymore, won’t be eligible for parole until 2033 because this.]

Saturday Matinee – Steve ‘n’ Seagulls, Little Feat & Buddy Guy

Steve N’ Seagulls is a band from Finland that records bluegrass covers of various heavy metal groups (including AC/DC) and they’re entirely awesome.

Little Feat was (and is) an underrated band that didn’t get as much attention as they deserved, despite Jimmy Page’s endorsement. Here they are with Emmy Lou Harris and Bonnie Raitt on backup vocals playing their 1973 hit “Dixie Chicken.” Great swamp rock.  (Check out the lead-in to their 1979 album “Down On The Farm” for a grin.)

Buddy Guy paid tribute to complimented both Hendrix and Cream at the Byron Bay Blues Fest in April 2014.

The Saturday Matinee Dixie Edition – Duane Eddy, Little Feat & The Band

If this flag represents slavery, racism and oppression, then every flag of every nation in existence in 1776 did so as well. So what. This country abolished slavery over a hundred years ago, yet slavery still thrives in many parts of the world, most notably Africa and the middle east. Where’s the outrage over that?

There is none because the attack on the Confederate Flag has nothing to do with slavery or racism, and everything to do with attacking fiscally conservative southern politicians.

Let’s rock.

The racist band Little Feat performs “Dixie Chicken” featuring racist vocalists Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris.

Saturday Matinee – 4 Shorts, A Really Happy Dude, Captain Beefheart & Little Feat

What a happy guy. After those two vids, we gotta walk it down.

Here’s Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band (1974) with “Upon The My O My.” We’re not quite at ground level yet, and since we neglected to honor Mardi Gras last week, let’s amend and repair the accidental and unintended oversight with this:

Saturday Matinee – Plympton, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits

Bill Plympton is one of the last of the great hand-drawn animators. Amazing stuff, his.

I know this is early, but when I saw the post at Weasel Zippers about Holdren telling the FCC to force broadcasters to air “population control” messages, I thought of Chairman Mao.
Which naturally made me think of this: A version I’ve never heard–no Lowell George, but another very good (recently) dead guitar player.
