The Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel (1565)
“In 1565, twelve years after the death of François Rabelais (1494-1553) — the French Renaissance author best known for his satirical masterpiece The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel, the bawdy tale of two giants, Gargantua and his son Pantagruel — the Parisian bookseller and publisher Richard Breton brought out Les songes drolatiques de Pantagruel (The drolatic dreams of Pantagruel). The slim volume, save a short preface from Breton, is made up entirely of images — 120 woodcuts depicting a series of fantastically bizarre and grotesque figures, reminiscent of some of the more inventive and twisted creations of Brueghel or Bosch.”

“Despite the claims (echoed too in the book’s subtitle), the book’s wonderful images are very unlikely to be the work of Rabelais himself — the attribution probably a clever marketing ploy by Breton. […] The creator of the prints is now widely thought to be François Desprez, a French engraver and illustrator behind two other sets of imaginative designs, similar in style.”
Those prints remind me of Jim Woodring’s stuff.

Medieval WTF
A long, long time ago this painting made complete sense.
There’s a wood-fired forge, anvils, metal working tools, a peacock, a gryphon(?!) a deer and a bigass possum watching a naked man without genitalia cringe as a woman takes an axe to a parrot while the wind is blowing.
It’s an illustration from a French manuscript entitled The Personification of Nature Making Birds, Animals and People [ca. 1405].
Okay, so Mother Nature had already finished creating The Birds, The Animals and at least one of The People, but then she realized that the poor guy needed a pecker. If anyone else has a better analysis, post it, because I’m done here.

Great Barrington – Business is Greater than Great!
It appears that someone/some people have created a YouTube channel about the town of Great Barrington, MA that has a video for EVERY business in the town.
The song is the same in all of the videos and each video is just filled with some exteriors of the business.
I am obsessed.
