Saturday Matinee – Samantha Fish, Shovels & Rope & The Marcus King Band

Samantha Fish has been playing her cover of the Barbara Lewis’ classic for a while, but I  just heard it for the first time today. There are more recent versions on the Utoobage, but I like this one the best. [h/t lobo91]

It starts out slow then throws you face down in the mud. Husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst tour forever as Shovels & Rope.

Saturday Matinee – Russian Cyberfarm, KMAC2021, The Marcus King Band & Playing For Change

KMAC2021 has been around a while, does some great short videos and has close to a million fans on the Utoobage. He does some serious stuff, too.

Marcus King started learning guitar at age three or four, played professionally since he was 11. He’s a fourth-generation musician; his grandfather was a country guitarist, and his father, Marvin King, continues to perform live.

Musicians from around the globe, assembled by Playing For Change, covered the NOLA staple Iko Iko in style. It features Dr. John (in one of his last recordings), the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, New Orleans’ favorites Ivan Neville, Donald Harrison and George Porter, Jr.

Saturday Matinee – Jerry Jeff Walker, The Marcus King Band & Rachel Mazer

Jerry Jeff Walker‘s re-recording of “Trashy Women” from 2014. Glad to see he’s still around (even if his rhymes still suck donkeys). Don’t remember him? He first came onto my radar with his cover of one of the greatest beer bar singalong songs ever.

The Marcus King Band fires all 12 cylinders. Nice style mash IMO.

Rachel Mazer rolls a nice groove, wants me so bad she can’t let it go. (Rachel, get in line and be patient. I’ll get to you in time.)

If you didn’t notice, all three vids are from the same source, Jam In The Van (backed by Turtle Wax). Nice to hear some fresh air.
