Saturday Matinee – Ghalia Volt, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado, and Soledad Brothers

Belgian guitarist (and occasional one-woman band) Ghalia Volt grew up listening to her grandparents’ traditional Spanish music and flamenco songs, then moved onto punk, garage rock, psychobilly and roots rock. She began performing as a street busker in Europe and is now anchored in New Orleans.

Since their beginnings as a Copenhagen bar band, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado have been dubbed Denmark’s premier roots rockers. The septet has performed in Scandinavia, Europe, Canada, the US and Asia for the past twenty years.

Soledad Brothers were an American garage rock trio from Maumee, Ohio. Taking strong influence from blues rock and punk, the band produced four albums and were active from 1998 to 2006. They took their name from a trio of convicted members of the Black Panther Party, incarcerated at Soledad Prison in the early 1970s.

Panic walks amok: This week’s news feeds shifted to stories of dignitaries chowing down in China, a possible super El Niño, un-salmandering the gerrymandering, snorkeling near the USS Arizona, and the Rat Turd Virus. Saturday Matinee – BALTHVS, KALEO, and Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado

Formed in 2020, BALTHVS is a Colombian psychedelic funk surf latin jazz rock group consisting of Balthazar Aguirre / guitar; Johanna Mercuriana / bass; Santiago Lizcano /drums.

This blues rock indie band formed in 2012 in Reykjavik, Iceland, but KALEO means “the voice” in Hawaiian. After signing with Atlantic records, they relocated to Austin, Texas, in 2015. [More info on Wiki].

A three day weekend is upon us, with Monday being Unnamed Day due to the recent discovery of Cesar Chavez’ past indiscretions. In celebration, a lot of people nationwide will be hitting the streets, to march around waving signs, chanting Hey Hey Ho Ho mantras and disrupting traffic, all because they’re worried about the US becoming a monarchy or some nonsense. Whatever happens won’t be enough to cancel valuable porch time, so we’ll see you tomorrow at the crack of noon.

Saturday Matinee – The Walkers Blues Band, Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado

The Walkers Blues Band cover Slim Harpo’s Te Ni Nee Ni Nu. I couldn’t find details about the group other than they made their debut in 2015 at the Festival Internacional de Blues de Asunción, Paraguay.

Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters need no introduction. Fun fact: Ronnie Earl (aka Ronald Horvath) was born in Queens, NY, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education & Special Education from Boston University.
