Saturday Matinee – Vulfpeck, Lettuce Funk & Curtis Mayfield

Vulfpeck has a cool funk/jazz groove, reminds me of Weather Report, except these guys make ridiculous “I’m About To Pop A Nut” faces while they jam.

Lettuce [aka Lettuce Funk] combines retro funk with retro future funk, and it works.

Jump to 5:08 for the Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie / Led Zeppelin funk mashup. (I hear some of Zappa’s “I Am The Slime” in there, too.) Lettuce even had the cojones to cover Curtis Mayfield, and they did him right.

ksbeth– I assume you’re referring to Vulfpeck. Killer bass work.

The band members attended University of Michigan’s music school. They first came together as a rhythm section for a performance at the Duderstadt Center, a university facility that houses an arts library and other resources. After reading an interview with German producer Reinhold Mack, band founder Jack Stratton conceived of Vulfpeck as an imagined German version of the U.S. session musicians of the 1960s such as Funk Brothers, Wrecking Crew, and Muscle Shoals. The idea was to channel that era of the live rhythm section.
