Saturday Matinee – Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy, The Fenians, Gaelic Storm & The Pogues

Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy singing “Mary Mack” at National Stadium, Dublin, February 1977.

The Fenians‘ “Token Whiskey Song.” We followed Terry Casey & Co. back when they were the house band at The Harp. Good peeps, all of ’em. (Their version of  “Rattlin’ Bog” is one of my favorites because they added some verses.)

Gaelic Storm‘s Patrick Murphy tells the tale leading up to the classic Irish traditional song “The Night I Punched Russell Crowe In The Head.”

What’s St. Patrick’s Day without a Pogues vid? Dare you to figure out what Shane McGowan is, um, singing.

That should keep you set for a bit while I dodge out for some Harp Lager and Mulligan Stew. Have a great St. Patrick’s Day, see you back here first thing Sunday.

You Must Be Logged In Error – WorpDress Strikes Again

[This post will remain at the top of the list until Word Press either fixes the problem or undoes it.  Scroll down for the newer stuff. –Bunk]

Not that we get a lot of comments here, but if you try to post one you may get this error message:

WordPress decided to make some platform changes yesterday [13 March] without telling anyone. One of the problems is that commenting is blocked unless you have a WP account, or log in with FB or something. Brilliant.

A lot of bloggers on the WordPress Forum  are pissed, and for good reason.

The .Gif Friday Post (on Thursday) No.219 – Kit Kat Clock Hate, Zoo Chimp Hate, Ninja Cat Hate

The first is cool, because I have one, and they’re evil as hell.

The second, I don’t know, but someone’s not paying attention to what’s going down.

The third is completely in the realm of douchebaggery, primarily because Mr. Dbag thought his sit-ups were worth recording. I’m glad he did, because it’s one of the few .gif animations that induce mental sound effects.

Update– Blew the scheduling for the Friday >gif post. I set my calendar ahead instead of my clocks. Oh well…

It Made Me Laugh

A lot of things have been going down outside of Tacky Raccoons that I’m involved with, and that screencap made me laugh on a number of levels. (Yeah, it’s a screencap, not a photoshop. Click on it.)

After the untimely death of Andrew Breitbart, some of his close friends and co-workers decided to do a 24 hour dj marathon, via Twitter, consisting of songs that they liked. I came in late to the show, and found that @Liberty_Chick posted the Tubes’ “Mondo Bondage.” There was some funny convergence that popped up on the screen.

I can’t explain it all here, but it has to do with Andrew Breitbart, this, and some other things I am involved with elsewhere just for fun.

That .png image at top has so many built-in contradictions and subtle innuendo that I thought it was worth a post. If you get it, great – pass it on. If you don’t, we’ll have something entirely different tomorrow.

YAY! Bumpercars! YAY!

[via email from 1389AD]
We’ve featured Rat Rods before, but now it’s time for some street legal mobiles that would make Ralph Nader crawl into a freshly dug grave just to roll over.

Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal.

They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we’ve seen in too long. There are seven of these little monsters floating around California and they’re all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap.

They were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson Motorcycle engines but they rattled like heck because of the two cylinder vibration and Tom replaces them with four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750’s and a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase.

Are these true Babe Magnets? For sure, and they’re Unsafe At Any Speed, which is just how we like it on Tacky Raccoons.

Saturday Matinee – Slim Harpo, The O’Jays & The Persuasions

Slim Harpo‘s “Scratch My Back.”

O’Jays stroll on Soul Train. [h/t Gwendolyn W.]

The Persuasions are one of the best a capella groups ever. Frank Zappa referred to bassman Jimmy “Bro” Hayes as “The Human Sub-Woofer.” (The Persuasion’s tribute to Zappa Frankly A Cappella is excellent, btw.)

And I’m out of time for tonight, so have a great weekend folks. See you tomorrow.
