Stuff I Do When I’m Bored

Stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Neil Young, Kinky Friedman & Steven Wright

Powderfinger is one of my favorite Neil Young songs, but this my favorite version.

“Who are we to say the boy’s insane?” – Kinky Friedman on Charles Whitman,

Yeah, Friedman was being sarcastic, and yeah, Whitman was insane. Okay, let’s lighten this up just a tad.

I dare you to watch less than the full clip. Steven Wright is the greatest one-liner comedian since Henny Youngman.

Have a great weekend, folks. We’ll be back tomorrow whether you like it or not.

Saturday Matinee – Tank Girl, Classic Hammond B3 Organ Solos, Tom Waits, Fishbone & Neil Young

Since I embarrassed myself by admitting that I was clueless about “Tank Girl,” maybe this will make up for it. Here’s the movie trailer, featuring Lori Petty and Malcom McDowell.

Tribute to the Hammond B3 Organism Part 1. (Parts 2 & 3 here and here.)

That’s Tom Waits‘ “Jockey Full Of Bourbon”  from 1986. I’ve posted “Downtown Train” before and I’m not ashamed to repost it either.

Best comment on the Utoobage for that vid:
“This somehow makes Rod Stewart suck even more.”

Fishbone‘s “Cholly.” Years ago I mentioned to Birdman that I’d like to attend a Fishbone show. He responded, “No you don’t.” Birdman is savvy.

Neil Young in Japan, 2001. Country Dick Montana took that song and did it better, IMO.

Five videos makes the nut, and with that, we’re out. Have a great weekend, folks, and we’ll be back here tomorrow for more fun.

Saturday Matinee – TUC, Fleet Foxes, Sirens, SRV & Neil with Bruce doing Hendrix doing Dylan

The Unknown Comic, LIVE! [I showed up once as The UC at a party in college, came in unannounced and ran through 15 minutes of cheap jokes, left to change clothes and toss the bag, and returned as myself. People were still asking the host “How did you get HIM to show up?”]

Bunkarina turned me on to this vid from the Fleet Foxes, a band out of Seattle.

Fleet Foxes reminded me of the soundtrack to “Cold Mountain,” but since I couldn’t find a video of the Sacred Harp Singers of Liberty Church, I’ll go with “O Brother Where Art Thou” and The Song of the Sirens.

Okay, we’re gonna break out of that deadend theme and jump to a Stevie Ray Vaughan classic, “Texas Flood.”

Here are Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young completely blowing a rock classic. “All Along The Watchtower” was an acoustic Bob Dylan song that Jimi Hendrix electrified and made a hit. Even Dylan started playing Hendrix’ version.  The lyrics make no sense, but if you reverse the order of the verses, it does. Kinda.

Have a great weekend, folks, be back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Freedom, World Climate Control, Flo & Eddie, Neil Young (and A Poll)

Sure it’s simplistic, with the 1949 cartoon stereotypes and all, but that doesn’t make the message wrong. Worth watching.
[Found by danrudy here.]

Koko and Fitz try to change the climate.  Fleisher’s “Out of the Inkwell” series was nothing less than bizarre, and this is a good ‘un.

How ’bout some Flo & Eddie. Nobody got the joke, and the Turtles were fairly successful.

Neil Young’s “Powderfinger” was one of my favorites.  Never stopped to wonder why.

We don’t do many polls here, but we like to hear from you quiet ones from time to time. There’s no risk, your votes are completely anonymous. Just click as many as you like.  Consider it your contribution to the TR Steerage Committee.

Saturday Matinee – SCOT TREK, Paris@140mph, 2x (Ol’ 55), Long May You Run.

The laugh track is unfortunate as this dealie is funny by itself.  I’ve got no idea what they’re saying. [Found here.]

“On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of  Paris early in the morning . The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte  Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

“No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit. The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

“Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground.”

[Link and description via email. Apparently it’s been around for a while, but.  Tip o’ the tarboosh to Dan S.]

This was my introduction to Tom Waits, via the Eagles, and I  hated the Eagles from then on.  Looky here:

Ahhh. Yeah. The originals are always the best. Like this one:
