Saturday Matinee – Richard Thompson, Y Niwl & The Dip

“It’s kind of a social misfit song, nothing autobiographical here at all.” Richard Thompson, underrated folk rock guitarist and songwriter.

Cob Records of Porthmadog, Gwynedd, Wales hosted a farewell party in 2012 featuring North Wales surf rock gods Y Niwl . The band’s name is pronounced Uh Nule – “The Fog” in Welsh.

The Dip  is comprised of jazz students from  University of Washington (Seattle) and not only do they have the retro soul sound down, they got cowbell.

Lotta stuff going down these days, some good, some bad, and some is downright abhorrent. Let’s enjoy what what we like, protect what we treasure and we’ll deal with the rest when it comes. Have a great weekend, see you sometime tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Shovels & Rope, Richard & Linda Thompson, & Postmodern Jukebox

Shovels and Rope have a nice country sound – with dawgs. They’re a husband and wife team.

They remind me a little of Richard and Linda Thompson.

That song is one of my all-time favorites for unknown reasons, and we’ve posted at least one other version before.

On the other hand, these folks crack me up because they’re so talented and so spot on. Here’s another great hit from PostModern Jukebox.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more pasta and butter.

Saturday Matinee – Richard Thompson, Charles Ray Wiggins & Black Joe Louis

Richard Thompson snarks. If you’ve never heard of him, I pity you.

Charles Ray Wiggins (aka Raphael Saadiq) with “Heart Attack.” This is some nice retro soul with cool camera angles.

Black Joe Louis is in so heavy with Howlin’ Wolf influence that there’s nothing left to say. This is one of the best killer jams I’ve heard in years. Crank it.

Dang, so much stuff goin’ down in so little time. Have a great weekend folks, and see you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Axe Cop, Roadtrip, Original Stairway to Heaven, Mumbles, YaYa and the Wall of Death

Axe Cop is Awesome. PERIOD.

Whoever added the Boots Randolph sound track to this car chase gets our respect.

In 1964, The Beatles wrote “Stairway to Heaven.” [Found here.]

Clark Terry’s classic scat “Mumbles” [from M @ Blogmocracy].

Gotcha some Buckwheat Zydeco with a cover of Lee Dorsey’s “YaYa.”

Might have posted this before, but I like the song. Originally recorded by Richard and Linda Thompson, it still kicks. Have a great weekend, folks.
