The Tractors‘ Santa Claus is Comin’ (in a Boogie Woogie Choo-Choo Train) has a nasty intro, but keep with it because it rocks and the vid is cool.

Saturday Matinee – Shovels & Rope, Richard & Linda Thompson, & Postmodern Jukebox

Shovels and Rope have a nice country sound – with dawgs. They’re a husband and wife team.

They remind me a little of Richard and Linda Thompson.

That song is one of my all-time favorites for unknown reasons, and we’ve posted at least one other version before.

On the other hand, these folks crack me up because they’re so talented and so spot on. Here’s another great hit from PostModern Jukebox.

Christmas Saturday Matinee – Fran Martin, Bradlee & Golder-Novick, The Bug Tussel Bluegrass Band, The Dukes of Dixieland & The Magic Piano

It’s not quite rockabilly, nor is it The Frankies (it’s apparently by someone named Fran Martin) but it’s awesome.

The Bug Tussel Bluegrass Band‘s version is pretty good.

“Jingle Bells” […] was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh” in the autumn of 1857. Even though it is now associated with the Christmas and holiday season, it was actually originally written to be sung for American Thanksgiving.b[Via Wiki]

Bells on horses were a wintertime safety measure to prevent collisions at crossroads – snow muffled the sound of horses’ hooves, and sleighs made little noise. The subsequent title is not about jingle bells, but is a command for the bells to jingle.

Saturday Matinee – The Steve Gibbons Band, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox & The Carolina Chocolate Drops

The Steve Gibbons Band was cool. Anyone who could take a relatively obscure Chuck Berry song about a *ahem* novelty shop bust and get a minor hit in the 1970s was okay by me. I’d have never heard of Gibbons had I not been the 17th caller and won some albums.
