Saturday Matinee – The Platypus Conspiracy, Messer Chups, Tito & Tarantula and Rory Gallagher

From St. Petersburg, Russia,  Messer Chups is listed under vampire space zombie surf rock, and their version of the Bondage theme is the best I’ve heard. Recorded at Brin de Zinc (Chambery-France) 2014

Ten minutes of a bluesy Doors-ish groove. Tito and Tarantula were filmed for an episode of Texas Roadhouse Live (hosted by Kinky Friedman) in 2010. Tito Larriva played Radio Head in the movie TRUE Stories (1986) and was a founding member of The Plugz.

Rory Gallagher slides all over the place at the Montreux Jazz Festival, July 1977. Five years earlier he was crowned International Guitarist of the Year. He died in 1995 at the age of 47, from liver failure caused by prescription drugs; his grave marker is a replica of the award.

Saturday Matinee – Android 207, Talking Heads, Tito Larriva, Johnny Nash & Krosfyah

Android 207 is a fun stop-motion from Carrotkid (Paul Whittington). In 2007, the film received the Best Film, Best Technical and People’s Choice awards at the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival. I’ve posted it before, and it’s still one of my favorites.

Classic Talking Heads video won “Best Group Video” at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1987. I probably posted it before also – I couldn’t find a live version of …oh wait, just found one.

Tito Larriva plays Radio Head in the movie TRUE Stories (1986). Larriva was a founding member of The Plugz.

Lost another great talent this week. Johnny Nash (1940-2020) was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Jamaica in 1965, where rocksteady was big and reggae was just beginning to gain in popularity. Video is from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, 1968.

Krosfyah‘s single Pump Me Up (1995) was a hit in Barbados, went gold in Canada. Great Soca.

Saturday Matinee – Paul Simon and Chevy Chase, Tito Larriva & Tom Waits

By the end of the week I usually have a couple of videos already in the queue, but I found I had none ready to post, so I defaulted to retro vids.

A 2011 Paul Simon performance of “Kodachrome caught my ear. The missus walked in and asked why I was listening to that sappy song. I said I needed to post something for Saturday.

“If you’re going to post a Paul Simon video, it should be You Can Call Me Al with Chevy Chase,” and she’s right. It’s a classic, and it’s also the best Paul Simon video ever.
