Saturday Matinee – Salut Salon, Trix ‘O’ Treat & 1000mods

Antonio Vivaldi’s “Sommer” wird zum Schauplatz eines musikalischen Wettkampfs. Salut Salon fechten ihn akrobatisch aus, und mit viel Humor – ein Klassiker des Hamburger Quartetts. Ein Konzertmitschnitt aus dem Film “Salut Salon. Der Film” von Regisseur Ralf Pleger.

Bangkok’s Trix ‘O’ Treat has a cool mix of retro flavors with a bit of punk thrown in, and Billy Move is now my favorite song so far today. [Nice shirt at 1:09].

Wikipedia describes 1000mods  as “a stoner metal band from Chiliomodi, Greece, formed in 2006. [..] The name of the group is a pun linked to the village in which they were formed, as ‘a thousand’ is pronounced ‘chillia’ in Greek.”

Saturday Matinee – Cleverly Brand Alpaca Products, Marion & Sobo Band, The Mustangs, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

Digger Cleverly (frontman for the five member trio The Cleverlys) talks about his alpaca ranch.

Marion & Sobo Band does 1930s-era gypsy / Hot Club pretty well. Nice quirky video, too.

The Mustangs, is a famous western surf instrumental band from Finland. They’re so famous I can’t find anything about them.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears bring back the Stax/Volt soul sound without a Hammond B3 organ.

No Free Parking

According to some reports, pay benches were installed in Yantai Park, Shangdong province, eastern China, and were inspired by this art piece.

“The Chinese government got this idea of coin-operated park benches after seeing an art installation by German artist Fabian Brunsing where he created a similar bench as a protest against the commercialization of modern life. The irony must’ve somehow been lost in translation.”

I couldn’t verify the Yantai Park story, and it may be a complete fabrication.

“In 2008, German design student Fabian Brunsing created a piece called Pay & Sit. It’s an art installation in the shape of a park bench with sharp metal spikes that prevent people from sitting until they deposit €0.50 (about 70 cents) in the coin slot. It’s a (literally) pointed political statement, but that didn’t stop Facebook users from taking images of the bench out of context and presenting it as one more stop along the road to criminalizing the poor.”

Saturday Matinee – Tribe Members Watching Polar Bears, Atomic Leopards & The Oblivions

In 2005, Barcelona rockers Santi & David Lluch formed Atomic Leopards,  and were members of  Hellbilly Club. That’s not Spanish either – I think it’s Catalan.

Don’t know if The Oblivions chose that video, but as odd as it is, it seems appropriate. (The clip is from a Brazilian game show.)

Saturday Matinee – The Dixie Hummingbirds, A1 Hundo & The Brothers Comatose

The Dixie Hummingbirds on Jubilee Showcase in 1964. James Walker on lead vocals. Formed in 1928, and with changing lineups, they have performed for over 90 years.

A1 Hundo resurrects the grooves of Booker T. & The MG’s. Hard to find anything about the band.

The Brothers Comatose did a happy doomsday song.

Saturday Matinee – Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Justin Johnson & Altered Five Blues Band

Little Charlie & The Nightcats featured Rick Estrin on harp.

Justin Johnson cranked it up, floored it and blew the doors off. One of the greatest slide players around.

Altered Five Blues Band powers it up and flips the switch.

Kinda ran out of time (and steam) tonight, so I’ll make it short.

Saturday Matinee – The Heimatdamisch, The Iguanas & Tab Benoit

Highway to Hesse? Bon Goes to Bitburg? The Heimatdamisch is pure Oberkreiner rock.

The Iguanas album Nuevo Boogaloo (1994) had some catchy tunes, this being one of them. The Tex-Mex band from New Orleans has been doing it for decades on vinyl, stage, television and movies.

Tab Benoit, live at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival 24 June 2022. Great hard driving blues. Not sure of the band lineup, unless it’s Swampland Jam.
Backing Benoit is Corey Duplechin on bass, Chip Vayenas on drums.

Saturday Matinee – DoodleChaos, M. Shadows, Shadows Nepal & The Shadows

M. Shadows screams about something for half a minute.

The Shadows Nepal, from Narayangadh, Chitwanrock, have been performing for over 20 years and have a large following, both in Nepal and around the world. Dharma appeared on their 2nd album, Hidne Manche Ladcha, released in 2006. More about them here.

The Shadows in a clip from the 1961 movie The Young Ones, complete with their typical choreography (and some overdubbed not-quite-Beatlesque screaming girls).

I can’t remember if I’ve got big plans for the weekend or not, but I know I’m supposed to do something. See you back here whenever.

Saturday Matinee – Weapon Brown (trailer), Perch Creek & Deak Harp

The Perch Creek Family Jug Band (since renamed Perch Creek) are four siblings plus a stray from Northern New South Wales, are currently based in Melbourne, Australia.

Deak Harp jams outside Deak’s Mississippi Saxophones & Blues Emporium in Clarksdale, Mississippi (2014). Guy got his bonafides by following James “Mr. Superharp” Cotton up and down the east coast before getting a job driving Cotton’s van (and  THIS is a Mississippi Saxophone).

Lotta things going down these days, but that’s not news to anyone. In the meantime, have a great weekend and maybe we’ll see better things tomorrow. See you then.
