Hot ‘Lanta in May

Hot Lanta

On May 11-12, 1997, NASA used a specially outfitted Lear Jet to collect thermal data on metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. Nicknamed “Hot-Lanta” by some of its residents, the city saw daytime air temperatures of only about 26.7 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) on those days, but some of its surface temperatures soared to 47.8 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit). In this image, blue shows cool temperatures and red shows warm temperatures. Pockets of especially hot temperatures appear in white.

50 degrees Celsius = 120 degrees Fahrenheit = flat roof temperature. The red zone looks to be about 30C = 86F, but these are surface temperatures. The 1997 survey recorded air temperatures of 80 F – exactly the average high temp for May for Atlanta. Cool.

In other words, it’s a peachy image of normal surface temperatures for the city.

The .Gif Friday Post No.256 – Dance Hard, Old Man Doodle & Ephemeral Barrio

[First and Third found here and here.]

The middle one was my own experiment with MS Paint. Doodle, click, save, repeat x 86, then plug it into JASC and see what happens. Note that it was all done by right-hand mouse-clicks, even though I’m a southpaw. It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes I’m just entirely too bitchin’ for words.

Saturday Matinee – Imelda May, Jimmy & The Rackets; Ron Levy & Ronnie Earl; J. Geils, Duke Robillard & Gerry Beaudoin

Imelda May is way cool. That’s her version of  Buddy Holly’s “Looking For Love” which was also covered by The Stray Cats. It was never covered by Andy Tielman as far as I know, but here on The Saturday Matinee, one vid and three links just don’t make the nut.

Yep. That’s Jimmy & The Rackets as if I had to tell you, but now I’m torn between two more vids to post. I’ll resolve the dilemma by posting them both, back-to-back, because each of them made me smile for different reasons. Have a great weekend folks, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow.

1916 Hotness – Moriarty Playing Cards Cincinnati Ohio

Actresses featured in the Moriarty playing card series issued in 1916 by the Movie Souvenir Card Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The back of each card is a reproduction in multiple-colors of the painting “The Chariot Race.” The ad card within the pack proclaims: “Get a few packs of “Movies”–A Veritable Picture Gallery of the celebrities of the Movie World, treated with such a genius that it is the greatest novelty ever made in Souvenir Playing Cards, and is complete for playing all card games.”

I pick 3, 10 & Q diamonds, 8 & 10 clubs as if it matters. (5 hearts is an obvious slut. Don’t mess with her for more than one night.)

It Just Seems Right

White walls, fender skirts, glass packs and tuck ‘n roll upholstery. What more do you need? Blues, burgers and beer, babe.

Click on the image for a bonus and rock out. That’s for you, Lily.

Eileen & The Hot Links

Michael Jackson’s 1993 Patent is cool, but he likely got the idea from this guy.

Nothing but Plague Doctors. Prior to medical/scientific knowledge about the causes of The Black Death, Plague Doctors risked their lives attempting to treat the infected while trying to protect themselves from the  “miasma.” The very sight of a Plague Doctor terrified people as he was a harbinger of death, and due to his specialty, a Plague Doctor was often forced to be a recluse himself.

I missed the debut of the The Butter Dance, but inadvertently featured it here. Don’t try this at home, or anywhere for that matter. After all *ahem* Melati Suryodarmo is a professional. [h/t kdub]

Saturday Matinee – Chameleon Climbs Water, Chameleon Attacks iPhone & Other Stuff

Chameleon frightened by a technological thingie.

Where do we go from here? I’m not gonna post Boy George, and the Utoobage offering of a band called “The Chameleons” held little interest for me. Oh wait. I got it.

The Lounge Lizards, 1988, “The Voice of Chunk.”  This experimental group never quite hit, but they had a point. Some might axe me, “Bunk, do you really like this crap?” and my emphatic response is, “No, but at least they tried.”

This is the stuff that I like. Keith Ferguson formed The Tail Gators after he left The Fabulous Thunderbirds, so there’s the lizard link. Big guitars. Yep.

I like this stuff, too, maybe even better:

The Persuasions are an awesome a capella group. Vid from 1971, about the time that they signed their first recording contract, courtesy Frank Zappa.

Have a great weekend folks, and we’ll continue the summer sleigh-ride tomorrow.

On This Day Awesome Happened.
