Saturday Matinee – The Corridor Crew, Mad Sin, Lara Hope & The Ark-Tones and Moon Hooch

Quirky vid, catchy song, and an f-bomb, Mad Sin plays “a combination of rockabilly, punk, white-trash blues and tongue-in-cheek sarcasm.”

Lara Hope & The Ark-Tones do the roots rock retro nicely.

Too cool not to share. Moon Hooch got stuck in a traffic jam in France and decided to make the best of it. Most popular Utoob comment? This:

Saturday Matinee – Chuck Barris & Eugene Patton, Count Basie & America Paz

Yeah, we lost another famous Chuck this week. Here’s Chuck Barris on The Gong Show featuring the late Eugene Patton, aka, Gene Gene The Dancing Machine. (If you thought I was going to post vids of The Unknown Comic, you’re mistaken, but here’s a link instead.)

GGTDM’s themesong was always Count Basie‘s 1938 hit “Jumpin’ At The Woodside,” so let’s go there. Here’s Basie’s Orchestra playing their 1937 hit “One O’Clock Jump” six years later in the movie Reveille with Beverly.

That 1943 Basie lineup likely included Buck Clayton, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Snooky Young, trumpet; Dicky Wells, trombone; Earle Warren, Buddy Tate, Don Byas, Jack Washington, saxes; Freddie Green, guitar; Jo Jones, drums. Not sure who’s on bass.

This Funk Bass Slapfest is awesome, and the girl’s smacking a six-string. I’m guessing that this how Julliard students settle their differences and go busking at the same time.

OH WAIT! THAT’S AMERICA PAZ!

Very impressive, Ms. America.

Saturday Matinee – Dinosaurs, Ted Hawkins, Playing For Change, Steve Ray Vaughan & Johnny Copeland

Dinosaurs are always fun, and this video has a great cast of relative unknowns. It’s over an hour long, but that’s just a day in dinotime.

Ted Hawkins (1936-1995) had more success in the UK than the US, although he had a local fan base in Venice Beach CA where he was a popular busker. Check out his background at the link.

This version of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” is fascinating, as it appears that all the players recorded remotely. Playing For Change is not a band, it’s an organization based in Venice California that records musicians from around the world, and is dedicated to creating and supporting music schools particularly in developing countries.

Haven’t heard any Stevie Ray Vaughan in a while, so here he is with fellow Texan Johnny Copeland, live At Montreux 1985.

Saturday Matinee – The Cabin Kids, Too Many ZooZ & Lucky Chops

Too Many Zooz crank it.

Trumpet player Matt Doe, baritone saxophonist Leo P. and drummer David “King of Sludge” Parks have been rocking the [NYC] subways since August [2013]. Doe, 21, and Leo P., 22, first became friends while attending the Manhattan School of Music, while Leo P. and Parks played together in another busking band, the Drumadics. They all came together with a simple goal: to make some extra cash [via].

Lucky Chops is/are a bit more elaborate and include some cool moves (the trombone player even does the Mashed Potato).

Automatic Human Jukebox

Wish I’d thought of that. Of course around here, you’d need a business license, a permit to perform in public, a Conditional Use Permit, construction permits, an occupancy permit, a permit for signage, proof of $1M in liability insurance and an ID number for tax purposes.  Oh, and a toilet room. All that just to make a little pocket change and entertain some people.
