Saturday Matinee – BluesBeaten Redshaw, Dave Hole & Ruf’s Blues Caravan

BluesBeaten Redshaw on cigar box banister rail & tea spoon diddley bow (via @bluesharp). Not a lot can be found about this BB Redshaw guy, other than he hails from Yorkshire, has been performing since he was 14, and drove a 1948 Fergusen tractor from northern England to Switzerland, playing gigs along the way.

Ruf’s Blues Caravan /Blues Got Soul revue brought together Si Cranstoun, Big Daddy Wilson and Vanessa Collier to perform Sam Cooke‘s classic righteously.

Saturday Matinee – Kay Kyser, John & Adrian, The Wheelgrinders & James “Super Chikan” Johnson

Kay Kyser (& his Kollege of Musical Knowledge) performed one of the strangest compositions I’ve heard recently. Invented in 1939, the Sonovox (or Talk Box)  was featured in many advertisements, and used for the voice of the talking train in Disney’s Dumbo. [Found here via here.]

Possibly the best lip sync  of Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs ever.  (That’s John and Adrian according to the YouTube post notes.) Whoop, la-di-dah.

The Wheelgrinders are three hep cats from Vancouver B.C. cranking some entirely bitchin’ roots rockabilly. [h/t Gord S.]

Alvin Lee & Ten Years After‘s “I’m Going Home” is one of the greatest speed metal rock tribute songs ever, and this live version dates to 1969 – Woodstock. TYA had only one Top 40 hit.

How ’bout some Samantha Fish?

Definitely dangerous. Hand her something with four wires nailed to it and she’ll jam it down your throat. I want to hear what she can do with a diddley bow.

How to make a cigar box diddley bow.

The Superbone begat the Firebird. Pretty ingenious in that it allows a B♭ trumpet player to play difficult keys (like F♯ major) with a slide adjustment.
