Saturday Matinee – Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Leo P & Jeff Beck w/ Imelda May

I get the grins whenever I hear The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Don’t let the silly stuff distract you; The Reverend has some killer chops.

Leo Pellegrino (of Too Many Zooz & Lucky Chops) really blows it in 2017 and breaks into Charles Mingus’ Moanin’ at about  3:14.

In 2019 Pellegrino sued  Epic Games for allegedly using his likeness when designing the “Phone it in” dance emote. “Because of his externally rotatable feet, he eventually developed his own unique dancing style and his signature and original movements – viz., the Signature Move,” reads the filing. 

Jeff Beck & Imelda May – great take on The Shangri-Las‘ 1964 breakout hit Remember (Walking In The Sand).

I hear there’s a football game this weekend, so burn your masks, fix up a batch of chili and we’ll see you tomorrow.

 

Saturday Matinee – Barbara Mandrell, Ry Cooder, John Lee Hooker & Bonnie Raitt

Steel guitar prodigy Barbara Mandrell appeared numerous times on The Johnny Cash Show. (This one is from the 1976 Christmas Special.)

I asked a comely waitress, “Is this a new teaching?” She said, “There is no God but God, and Ralph Mooney is his name.”

Ry Cooder, one of the greatest slide guitar players ever, paid tribute to Mooney in 2018.

Let’s stay with the slide. Bonnie Raitt & John Lee Hooker (1912, 1915, 1917, 1920 or 1923-2001) got down and dirty in 1991.

Brazil native Indiara Sfair & Guilherme Tosin cover Robert Johnson’s Walking Blues. Sfair is/was a member of Brazilian blues band “Milk’n’Blues.”

Justin Johnson‘s axe is a shovel, and he sells ’em, too.

G.E. Smith gets all swampy and stuff with a tribute to late bassman Tom “T Bone” Wolk. Both backed Hall & Oates and were the core of the SNL Band (1985-1995).

Saturday Matinee – Captain Beefheart, BeauSoleil & George Thorogood

Complete Captain Beefheart concert, possibly in Toronto 1974 [via]. I saw CB and his Magic Band live in the early 80s at The [famous but now defunct] Golden Bear in Huntington Beach California. Bizarre tribal rhythmical poetry during his “Bat Chain Puller” tour.

BeauSoleil undated and completely awesome.

George Thorogood‘s vid from 1982 included cameos by pool sharp Wiilie Mosconi and the late great Bo Diddley.

Saturday Matinee – Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, Christopher Ameruoso, Tab Benoit & Tommy Castro with Samantha Fish

That’s Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle performing The Fiddle Player’s National Anthem in 2015(?). And yes, they got clogged by a buck dancer. “Orange Blossom Special” is probably the greatest train song ever, followed by the late Steve Goodman‘s “City of New Orleans.”

Nice 3-string electric cigar box slide git-fiddle from Christopher Ameruoso in 2015.

“Night Train” is a killer boogie jam by Tab Benoit, Tommy Castro & Samantha Fish recorded at The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA, 2014. Somewhere, John Lee Hooker is smiling.

Saturday Matinee – Werewolf Diskdrive, Justin Johnson & Buckethead

I really don’t know what to make of this, but it somehow seems appropriate given the fires in California. Reminds me of early Devo vids. [h/t Bunkessa]

Justin Johnson amazes me. Plays lead, rhythm, bass and chorus at the same time on a 4-string cigar box slider. One of the commenters on the Utoobage posted “I’m convinced this guy is f***ing Buckethead,” and others agreed, so let’s roll with that.

“I was eating it, and I put the mask on and then the bucket on my head. I went to the mirror. I just said, ‘Buckethead. That’s Buckethead right there.’ It was just one of those things. After that, I wanted to be that thing all the time.” –Buckethead

Yeah, that’s a hella nice jam despite the silly visual gimmicks. Brian Carroll rocks.

Saturday Matinee – Christopher Ameruoso, Sonia Sanchez, & The Rave-Ups.

Don’t know much about these two, but I’ll say this. Christopher Ameruoso has a nice cigar-box slide style, but he’d do better without his cutesy mugging. On the other hand, any woman who can slap a lime green stand-up bass like Sonia Sanchez gets my vote.

Serious PsychoPunkaBilly there, and Sanchez slaps the hell out of that bass. Let’s take it down a notch. I was about to post The Rave Ups’ classic “In My Gremlin” but maybe we should go with this instead.

What a great groove. The Rave-Ups were underrated and deserved more recognition IMO, but MO doesn’t count, by the way.

Saturday Matinee – Nate Smith, Justin Johnson & Ry Cooder

Nate Smith jams it. Betcha can’t spot the mistake.

Seems I heard Justin Johnson before, but only accidentally. Sure, it’s a compilation vid, but that there is some righteous awesome. Reminds me of this guy:

Ry Cooder took the slide guitar and shoved it right though my temporal lobes with his 1987 album “Get Rhythm.” It’s a must-have if you like Swamp Rock.

Saturday Matinee – How to Relax with your Dog, John Lee Hooker with Bonnie Raitt & Southside Johnny

I don’t normally post Twitter vids, but that amused me. Sound up, click play.

Awesome happened in 1994, at Santa Barbara California. Bonnie Raitt meets John Lee Hooker.

By the late 1970s, rock music was in the doldrums, the pits. Almost everything seemed to be corporate-marketing-department-formula-driven-pre-packaged-garbage, and much of it sounded the same. There was so much over-produced audio drek, I started going retro. Then this song hit me, and I liked the vibe.

Sure, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes spun off from Springsteen’s fame, but I liked them better because they got less radio play.
