Saturday Matinee – Werewolf Diskdrive, Justin Johnson & Buckethead

Saturday, 9 December 2017

I really don’t know what to make of this, but it somehow seems appropriate given the fires in California. Reminds me of early Devo vids. [h/t Bunkessa]

Justin Johnson amazes me. Plays lead, rhythm, bass and chorus at the same time on a 4-string cigar box slider. One of the commenters on the Utoobage posted “I’m convinced this guy is f***ing Buckethead,” and others agreed, so let’s roll with that.

“I was eating it, and I put the mask on and then the bucket on my head. I went to the mirror. I just said, ‘Buckethead. That’s Buckethead right there.’ It was just one of those things. After that, I wanted to be that thing all the time.” –Buckethead

Yeah, that’s a hella nice jam despite the silly visual gimmicks. Brian Carroll rocks.

Then here comes this guy.

Have a great weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow for more stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Christopher Ameruoso, Sonia Sanchez, & The Rave Ups.

Saturday, 2 December 2017

Don’t know much about these two, but I’ll say this. Christopher Ameruoso has a nice cigar-box slide style, but he’d do better without his cutesy mugging. On the other hand, any woman who can slap a lime green stand-up bass like Sonia Sanchez gets my vote.

Serious PsychoPunkaBilly there, and Sanchez slaps the hell out of that bass. Let’s take it down a notch. I was about to post The Rave Ups’ classic “In My Gremlin” but maybe we should go with this instead.

What a great groove. The Rave Ups were underrated and deserved more recognition IMO, but MO doesn’t count, by the way.

Have a great weekend, folks, and we’ll do something different tomorrow.

P.S. To the guy who got out of his truck to tell me that my brake lights were out, THANK YOU. It explains a couple of close calls I saw in my rear view mirror…

Saturday Matinee – Nate Smith, Justin Johnson & Ry Cooder

Saturday, 4 November 2017

Nate Smith jams it. Betcha can’t spot the mistake.

Seems I heard Justin Johnson before, but only accidentally. Sure, it’s a compilation vid, but that there is some righteous awesome. Reminds me of this guy:

Ry Cooder took the slide guitar and shoved it right though my temporal lobes with his 1987 album “Get Rhythm.” It’s a must-have if you like Swamp Rock.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you tomorrow when the time is right.

Saturday Matinee – How to Relax with your Dog, John Lee Hooker with Bonnie Raitt & Southside Johnny

Saturday, 21 October 2017

I don’t normally post Twitter vids, but that amused me. Sound up, click play.

Awesome happened in 1994, at Santa Barbara California. Bonnie Raitt meets John Lee Hooker.

By the late 1970s, rock music was in the doldrums, the pits. Almost everything seemed to be corporate-marketing-department-formula-driven-pre-packaged-garbage, and much of it sounded the same. There was so much over-produced audio drek, I started going retro. Then this song hit me, and I liked the vibe.

Sure, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes spun off from Springsteen’s fame, but I liked them better because they got less radio play.

Have a great weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow for more stuff.

P.S. We filed a complaint with the WordPress peeps about auto-play advertisements and got a positive response. They asked for a screencap of the offending ad, so I sent one. Let’s see what they do with it.

Saturday Matinee – Rowan Atkinson, The All Night Long Blues Band, Samantha Fish & Satchmo

Saturday, 9 January 2016

Rowan Atkinson plays air drums with brilliance.

The All Night Long Blues Band at The Cat Head Store in Clarksville Mississippi, 2013. There’s something both absurd and awesome going on there, and I like it.

This one’s a jawdropper. Samantha Fish kills it on a 4-string cigar box guitar. From Wiki:

During the summer of 2013, Fish was called up on stage to play with a skeptical Buddy Guy who was so impressed with her playing on the guitar, he declared with a beaming smile to his audience, “When this kind of shit happens, I’ll play all night!”

Let’s wrap it up with some Satchmo. This 1933 version of “Dinah” was some great jump blues.

Have a great weekend and we’ll roll again tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Justin Johnson, Luna Lee, Kim Wilson & Patrick Sweany

Saturday, 5 December 2015

Roots music performer Justin Johnson plays an electrified custom cigar box diddley bow.

Luna Lee plays Elmore James on the gayageum [found via].

The Kim Wilson Blues All-Stars. Jump to 08:20 for an impromptu jam.

Here’s some heavy duty swamp rock. Although Patrick Sweany is from Ohio, he stomps it with “Every Gun.Zach Setchfield on guitar, Ron Eoff (?!) on bass and Dillon Napier on drums.

That should make the nut for this edition of The Saturday Matinee. Have a great weekend, folks. See you tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Holton Rower’s Paint Spills, Jack Broadbent & Floyd Jones

Saturday, 21 February 2015

Interesting artsy spilly painty project [via].

Awesome slide by Jack Broadbent on the streets of Amsterdam in 2014 with a cover of Canned Heat’s “On The Road Again.”

On The Road Again” was penned by the late Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Floyd Jones. Wilson died of a barbiturate overdose in 1970 at the age of 27, within a few weeks of the similar drug-related deaths of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. So what about Floyd Jones? Let’s hear him.

Here’s Floyd Jones‘ “Stockyard Blues” with his own commentary.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Tav Falco & Panther Burns, Rory Block, Don Leady & The Tailgators

Saturday, 26 July 2014

Tav Falco is a punkabilly oddity who’s been around for a while.

Rory Block cooks up a big batch o’ Robert Johnson and serves it hot.

If I’m not mistaken, The Tailgators were a spinoff band featuring bassist Keith Ferguson from The Fabulous Thunderbirds back in the 80s, as if it matters. Don Leady rocks.

Have a great Hamas-Free weekend folks. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Harley Trikes, Joey Smith & Jerry Jeff Walker

Saturday, 28 September 2013

Harley-Davidson WTF courtesy of Jonco. Nice soundtrack.

Joey Smith won some kind of blues award without a backup band. I considered that cheating until I heard him shred the awesome.
(No Wiki page yet).

Jerry Jeff Walker can’t rhyme for crap, yet his songs are still awesome.

That does it for this edition of The Saturday Matinee.  Come back tomorrow for new oddities.

Saturday Matinee – Kaitlin Heller, Ike Willis with Sara Zimmerman & Johnny Winter

Saturday, 21 September 2013

The viral Twerking Fail video, uncut. Jimmy Kimmel & stuntwoman Kaitlin Heller chumped the MSM.

Ike Willis‘s version of Zappa’s “Suicide Chump” with Sarah Zimmerman. Most of her stuff is acoustic, but she’s no slouch on electric slide guitar. The last line in the song is “All you can say as you run down the street is:” and Willis cuts it off. In Zappa’s version, it transmogrifies into “Jumbo Go Away.”

Let’s get back to the slide.

Johnny Winter‘s “Mean Town Blues” from 1970, and no, that’s not a cover – he wrote it. Awesome Texas boogie in the style of John Lee Hooker.

That’s it for this edition of The Saturday Matinee. Rock on.
