Saturday Matinee – The Heimatdamisch, The Iguanas & Tab Benoit

Highway to Hesse? Bon Goes to Bitburg? The Heimatdamisch is pure Oberkreiner rock.

The Iguanas album Nuevo Boogaloo (1994) had some catchy tunes, this being one of them. The Tex-Mex band from New Orleans has been doing it for decades on vinyl, stage, television and movies.

Tab Benoit, live at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival 24 June 2022. Great hard driving blues. Not sure of the band lineup, unless it’s Swampland Jam.
Backing Benoit is Corey Duplechin on bass, Chip Vayenas on drums.

Saturday Matinee – The Iguanas, The Forbidden Pigs & The Paladins

New Orleans band The Iguanas (Rod Hodges on guitar & accordion, Joe Cabral on sax & guitar, Rene Coman on bass, Doug Garrison on drums, and Eric Lucero on trumpet) live at Cafe Nine, New Haven, Connecticut on Oct. 19th, 2008. Nice vibe.

I have an Iguanas CD.

The missus and I saw them live. Billy would climb up on his upright bass, the drummer would leap over his drum set and hammer on the strings. Great show.

I have a Forbidden Pigs CD.

Glad to see The Paladins are still around. Saw them live – they were the warm up band for The Fabulous Thunderbirds at the now-defunct Golden Bear. Bass player was killer, looked like he was biting an invisible tennis ball while slapping.

Saturday Matinee – The McCoys, The Gentrys & The Iguanas

The McCoys had a hit with 1964’s “Hang On Sloopy” and Sloopy was a hottie in this vid. The Ohio State Marching Band (aka TBDBINTL) coopted the song, and did their version, a capella, followed by the instrumental version, and recorded it ca.1970 on “Buckeye Battle Cry.”

Nice mashup of 60s TV with The Gentrys‘ 1965 hit “Keep On Dancing.” The song was released about the same time I fell in love with Ronnie Specter who told me she wanted to be my baby whoa oh oh oh oh.

“Blues For Juarez.” Texas roadtrip vid featuring The Iguanas has a nice slow groove. I got the ice, you got the beer, and the tunes are locked and loaded.  Let’s roll.

Saturday Matinee – Buena Vista Social Club; Tito, Poncho & Celia; The Iguanas

“El Cumbanchero.” The Buena Vista Social Club is awesome. Tip o’ the Tarboosh to Rodan for reminding me of them.

Continuing with Afro-Cubano jazz, here’s Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez y Celia Cruz, with “Quimbara.” No idea what that translates to, but I guess it’s a dance style.

This was one of The Iguanas best songs, and the video doesn’t do it justice. (Here’s the studio version w/o video. As an aside, in the live video, the bass player looks like me in my 20s, but with a better haircut. Heh.) Since The Iguanas were from New Orleans, let’s move in that direction…

New Orleans is gonna be in the news again in a couple of days, but not for the right reasons. I suggest we ignore the msm and enjoy the music instead.
