Legible Graffiti

Mathieu Tremblin lives and works in Rennes and Arles, France, finds graffiti and enhances them for legibility (and sometimes the taggers return).

“As if tagging the city was about freedom, and drawing decorative letters about control, I wanted to find a project to turn “ugly tags” into something “beautiful”, but preserve the subversive part of language distortion.”

I find it interesting that the vandalism in France is indistinguishable from that in the US, and I wonder why.

Graffito Removal Graffito

Earlier this month, British stencil artist DS painted one of his signature characters, an old Hello Kitty spoof he’d long ago dubbed Bad Kitty, on an Islington wall along Essex Road. The next morning, the 28-year-old saw someone buffing the figures and photographed the removal process from across the street. Then DS stenciled the stranger’s portrait in the very same place.

Amusing, but it’s still vandalism of private property, even if you call it “street art.”

Interlocking Pavers

Yeah, that looks cool, shows how interlocking pavers work.

It’s cool until you realize that someone has to pay several hundred clams to repair the damage. Until then, if some little kids are on the wrong side of the stack when the wind blows…

Please don’t do this.

Mom would have loved this had I painted it in her basement, but only after she kicked my ass upstairs one step at a time.

Thanks for kicking my ass, Mom. We’re gonna miss you.
