The Great Farm: Urban Forester Scores Job Measuring Barley Crop

Tyler Stevenson, an urban forester, measures barley that is growing in the fields at the Great Park on Friday morning.

Campus Bookstore Fail

There are exactly two books that I’m gonna pre-purchase with cash. Before I take them off the shelf they will have increased in value and I’ll sell them back at double what I paid for them.

Then I’ll do it again.

Mr. Zero

Mr. Zero.  He’s Nothing. Really Nothing.

Although he’s Nothing, he wants everyone to pay attention to him, to pay attention to Nothing.

He knows Zip, Nada, and Everything That Isn’t. No one knows him, yet too many people understand him. He says Nothing to everyone.

Mr. Zero is very intelligent, and agrees to Nothing because he can deliver it. He can give you Nothing as well.  He can make sure that you have plenty of Nothing, so much so that you can only give it away, even though nobody wants it.

Unfortunately, Mr. Zero demands a lot. He is capable of taking everything and turning it into Nothing, which is exactly what you will get back if you give him anything.

He creates Nothing, and he sells it, too, at a very high price.

The only way to stop Mr. Zero is to give him Nothing.

Climategate Summarized

Norwich, England (Strutts News Services) – Since all of the raw data regarding climate change  has been finally released to the public for scrutiny after many years of cooperation by the keepers of such proprietary knowledge and research, we at Tacky Raccoons believe it is our duty to present this data in a form that is easily understandable to all sentient beings.

(Click on any graph to enlarge it.)

This first graph illustrates the Vapors Constant. It reflects the ideal average temperature of the globe, without meandering from the mean average.

This graph shows the Vapors Constant, and adds the values purported by the Bieber-Naughton studies as well as the Moholy-Nagy data.

Here we retain the Vapors Constant while showing the results of Zager & Evans/Fooser-Bieber Conundrum. Note that they diverge.

Combining all four studies and retaining the Vapors Constant, results in the graph above.

Using the Strutts-Crumbler method, and overlaying the previous data sources, the results coagulate into a recobinizable pattern.  This pattern can be simplified further.

Once the data are resolved and mushed around a bit, the patterns become intuitively obvious to the casual observer.

It’s the elusive “Hockey Puck” of global warming.

We’re doomed.

Bite My Hot Links

Get Off My Blog_Bite Me Comics 091018

Anyone paying attention to the ongoing LGF soap opera will appreciate Bite Me Comics.  If you’re not, consider yourself fortunate.

Diesel’s book “Mercury Falls” is out on amazon. He’s  a funny guy who helped me get my blogging mojo. (More info here.)

The man who saved billions from starvation who you’ve probably never heard of: Norman Borlaug (1914-2009). Related video here (includes some unnessesary foul language from Penn Gillette).

Turning Number 1. I’ve got no clue what this is all about, but it’s yet more propaganda showing that the guy is always the idiot.

Little kids and the marshmallow torture.

Charlie Rose interviews himself and Steve is not happy. [Found here.]

Just click it. Do it. [Tip o’ the tarboosh to Bordm.]

Another TED video by someone I’ve never heard of talks about perceived value.

Happy Times – The Modern Woman

The Joys_gimcrack hospital 090929

Depending on the task, the modern woman should change her frock between duties such as to keep herself presentable for when her husband returns home. The modern woman should also have a variety of aprons to wear to compliment her daily wardrobe in case the husband arrives home early.

The modern woman is also advised to wash her wardrobe and aprons by hand on a daily basis such that her husband don’t be comin’ home from the plant and be findin’ y’all stinky and stuff.

Three Nested Klein Bottles

Nested Klein Bottles_Science Museum

This is one of a series of glass Klein bottles made by Alan Bennett in Bedford, United Kingdom for the Science Museum, London. It consists of three Klein bottles, one inside another. A Klein bottle is a surface which has no edges, no outside or inside and cannot properly be constructed in three dimensions. In the series Alan Bennett made Klein bottles analogous to Mobius strips with odd numbers of twists greater than one.

I disagree that it “cannot properly be constructed in three dimensions” as it obviously has been.  Perhaps they meant defined…

[UPDATE: Here’s a visual summary of a single Klein Bottle, showing its relationship with a Mobius Strip (thanks to Strider).]

Saturday Matinee – The Pencil, The Multiverse, & The Echos of Nyro

School is back in session, so check these out.

The Pencil. The late Milton Friedman is one of my favorites.

2005: Dr. Michio Kaku describes the purpose of LISA, scheduled for launch in 2010(?).  Woof.  This guy’s got some amazing ideas, despite his Berkely ties.

The intelligent Homerbird describes the daily rotation of the earth in easy to understand terms.

Speaking of Dimensions, I caught myself before I posted a 5th Dimension vid, and decided to post Laura Nyro instead since she wrote several of their hits. Because there are so few decent Laura Nyro videos on the Utoobage, here are three of her songs performed by others, including the 5thD.

Blood Sweat & Tears‘ version of  “When I Die” from 1970, live in Japan.  (Hope someone can take this semi demagnetized video tape and balance out the sound.)

Three Dog Night‘s “Eli’s Comin’.”

I secretly liked Nyro’s version of this song, too.

The Royalettes‘ “Gonna Take A Miracle.” This was not a Nyro song, although she covered the 1965 hit in 1971.

“Try DOME GAS – It’s Better”

Dome Gas 1926_Strange Cosmos 090710[Larger image can be found here.]

WHOA! 23¢ a gallon!  And what a GREAT slogan.

Let’s talk about gas prices vs. inflation.
Inflation calculator: 1926-2009 = 1,108.2%

Price per Gallon in 1926 (regular, leaded): $0.23/gal
Federal Gasoline Tax (up to 1933): $0.01/gal = 4.55%
Actual cost per gallon (1926 dollars): $0.22/gal
Actual cost per gallon, less taxes (2009 dollars):  $2.66/gal

Price per Gallon (regular unleaded) 10 July 2009: $2.90/gal
Federal Gasoline Tax 2009: $0.184/gal
California (Local + State + Fed Taxes) 6 July 2009:
$0.645/gal* = 2.9%

* Includes CA Sales Tax (7.25%) CA County & Local Sales Tax (1.25%), and  UST tax (1.2%) whateverTF that is.

Actual cost per gallon, less taxes (July 2009):  $2.26/gal**

**Note that the base price stated for California gasoline includes costs for state mandated fuel additives, summer/winter mixes, ethanol. Note also that this amount includes franchise fees, business license fees, miniscule profit by the small business folks, and Swantzenegger Boxer Feinswein Pelosi & Waxman fees, other “revenue enhancement fees” emanating from Sacramento, and costs for gettin’ the lead out.

[Sources found here and here.]

Now Let’s talk about mileage and cost and technology.
