Philadelphia firefighters work the scene of an overnight blaze in west Philadelphia on February 16, as icicles hang from where the water from their hoses froze. Bone-chilling, single digit temperatures have gripped the region, prompting the closure of all parish and regional Catholic elementary schools in the city of Philadelphia.
Ice encases a traffic light and two fire fighting ladders, formed from water used to fight a fire, near the scene of an overnight blaze in west Philadelphia on February 16.
Vehicles and a building are covered with ice as firefighters worked to keep a warehouse fire down in the Brooklyn borough of New York on February 1.
Beacon Street in Boston on February 16.
That last one wasn’t the result of fire hoses, but it’s awesome. Beside the threat of ice and snow collapsing roofs, the huge icicles are potential killers down below.

Incomprehensible Japanese Graduation Ceremony is awesome. [via]
The Third Degree is an Aussie band specializing in retro R&B and does it well. That lead singer’s got the vibe of early James Brown and Smokey Robinson, backed up by the Bar-Kays.
The Heavy has a great mix of funk, soul & swamp rock style (even though they blatently stole from Screamin’ Jay Hawkins).
I heard that the SuperBowl is coming up. Chili by 3, Broncos by 10. Have a great weekend, folks, see you tomorrow.
[Strutts News Services – Cleveland] Getting from Pennsylvania to Antarctica takes a while, but steady diligence always works.
Mennonites from around the globe are moving to free rescue vessels trapped in pack ice that threatens to crush the hulls of ships sent to evacuate a bunch of vapid idiots whose intentions were to view and compile data on melting ice during the Antarctica summer. The vapid idiots were successfully evacuated by ice breaking helicopters, and they’re now home safe and sound.
Those who volunteered for the rescue missions, as of this posting, are not, and nobody cares about those brave bastards.
EXCEPT FOR THE AMISH.

Home movies – the Directors’ analysis.
Very cold water is very dense. Fishing in a frozen lake in Finland. Here’s an explanation [via]:
They have inflated their BCDs (vests) with air. This will make them float up to the ‘top’. This allows them to stand on the ice upside down. If there was no ice, they would surface. You can see when they breathe, the CO2 will float to the top (bottom) of the ice and it trapped. The wheel barrow is filled with CO2 expelled (poured in from the bucket). This makes it want to float too and hence will stick to the bottom of the ice until they dump it out, which will make it loose its buoyancy and sink to the bottom…
Happy birthday to Kim Wilson, one of the greatest blues harp blowers. Saw him with his original lineup in the early 80’s, pre- Kid Ramos. Pure awesome then, pure awesome now. And just for the helluvit, here’ my favorite Zappa song to wrap it all up, “Black Napkins.”
Yeah, I may have posted that before, but so what – I like it. Have a great weekend, folks, be back here tomorrow for more fun and games.
