Saturday Matinee – Skywatch, Fundo de Quintal OFC, Grupo Fundo de Quintal & Planet Drum

When two outcast teens hack into a ubiquitous drone delivery system to pull a prank on their neighbor, they accidentally crash-land a dangerous prototype – and find themselves entangled in a life-and-death conspiracy.

Apparently it’s scheduled to be made into a TV series produced by Seth Macfarlane [via]

“Life in the countryside is not an easy life,” says Simão, explaining how the band shaped their unique sound. “Here there is nothing, no access to singing lessons, theater, or a place to buy instruments. So we are going to beat our improvised little things.”

Fundo de Quinal OFC is a lot of head-scratching fun. [Found here. More info here.] They took their name from these guys:

Grupo Fundo de Quintal or simply Fundo de Quintal (Backyard Group, roughly) is a Samba band which appeared in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s. Smooth rhythms.

Mickey Hart & Planet Drum revamped the Grateful Dead classic Fire On The Mountain. If you don’t have it in your collection, get this.

Saturday Matinee – Clanadonia, Mickey Hart / Planet Drum & Joe Bonamassa with Tina Guo

How ’bout something primal? Nothing better than Scottish tribal drums and bagpipes. Clanadonia is what it is, and it’s loud. “The Last of the Glaswegians” is going to be stuck in my head for days.

Mickey Hart & Planet Drum perform “Fire On The Mountain” (24 July 1999, Rome, New York).

Amazing speed cellist Tina Guo jams it with Joe Bonamassa on “Woke Up Dreaming” at Carnegie Hall (June 2017?). Takes them a bit to get in synch, then it soars. Guo’s take on Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” is fun, too.

Saturday Matinee – Tito Puente, Mickey Hart & Todd Rundgren

Pure percussion by Tito Puente e Los TropiJazz All Stars. I could listen to this stuff all day.

Decades ago (in college) we attended an off-campus house party that seemed to have a live band. I asked the host about it and he replied, “That’s the Rhythm Section. They’re in the basement.” So I went downstairs and found people taking turns on vinyl trash cans, bottles, cans, buckets, with wooden dowels and spoons, and it all sounded great as it morphed, non-stop. No electronics, just stoners people grooving on impromptu syncopated rhythms.

Micky Hart‘s Planet Drum project got my ear as well. Hard to say what musical instrument came first, the bone flute or the drum. I’d guess the latter, because you can bang on anything to create a tempo, and everything else is secondary. (Vocals don’t count unless you’re talmbout Hollerin.)

This is also appropriate, even though Texas wasn’t hit by the hurricane.

Saturday Matinee – Foli Rhythm, Mickey Hart, Booker T & The M.G.’s, John Lee Hooker & Floyd Dixon

Pure rhythm, and it’s worth watching to the end. [Found here.]

Mickey Hart‘s Planet Drum is awesome, no matter how many drugs he took while he was with The Grateful Dead.

Booker T & The M.G.’s were the best session band in the business.

John Lee Hooker. If you don’t know who he was, you’re already lost.

Floyd Dixon. Same as above.

Saturday Matinee: Planet Drum, Sirens, Spelling Bee Champ, Wright

Here’s Micky Hart’s Planet Drum from a few years back.  (I have one of the Planet Drum CDs that I play at full blast from my porch on Halloween.  I love the way it echoes around the neighborhood, even if Mrs. Strutts hates it.  When she’d complain, I’d switch to Tom Wait’s “Bone Machine.”  She doesn’t complain about Planet Drum anymore.)

The Sirens from “O Brother Where Art Thou” sang a song both pretty and dangerous.  Great movie.

Spelling Bee pro.  Great recovery.
