Saturday Matinee – Earl Barton & Lisa Gaye, The Wolfgangs & The Reverend Horton Heat.

Saturday, 5 August 2017

If you lived in that time period, you’d have done the exact same thing. Not me. Dig, man, I wouldn’t have been caught dead dancing plaid.

I don’t know anything about The Wolfgangs except that they rock and may or may not use illegal substances.

Very few bands can cover a classic Johnny Cash song like Folsom Prison Blues, but the Reverend Horton Heat did just that, and even cranked it up a notch.

Rock on, my friends. More stuff coming down the pipe.

Saturday Matinee – The Reverend Horton Heat, Beverly Watkins & Buckwheat Zydeco,

Saturday, 1 October 2016

I don’t listen to food shows on the radio, at least not intentionally, but sometimes I do by accident.

KFIAM640 features “The Fork Report” on Saturdays, featuring Neil Saavedra, and his themesong is pretty cool. Lordy, lordy. Last night I suddenly realized that he’s been playing The Reverend Horton Heat all this time. If you’re offended by Rockabilly cheesecake videos, click on it, turn away and just listen. The song is fun. The video is funner.

Yeah, I found that mildly amusing, but then I’m easily amused. So let’s go visit Beverly Watkins instead.

From the UToobage description:

Beverly Watkins plays a mean blues guitar, and that’s putting it mildly. Over six decades of performing, the 77-year-old has opened for Ray Charles, James Brown, BB King and other legendary musicians. She’s one of the greatest female blues guitarists, and still plays local gigs in Atlanta.

Not convinced? Try this.

Here’s some bad news.

Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural Jr. passed away Saturday, 24 September 2016 at the age of 68. The vid features Lenny Kravitz and Ry Cooder. Rock on, Buck [via].

We all move on, despite what we would like to believe. Have a great weekend, folks, and let’s all have fun while we still can.

Saturday Matinee – Patches The Horse, John/Lee/Pop Mashup & The Reverend Horton Heat

Saturday, 27 September 2014

Meet Patches the Horse.

That’s  just bizarre, but it kept my attention for more than 15 seconds, so I’m posting the clever mashup featuring Iggy Pop and Peggy Lee. Little Willie John’s “Fever” will never sound the same. So where do we go from here? I’m stumped. Oh wait, I got it. Let’s slow it down a tad with some retroness.

It suits me, so it suits you. The Reverend Horton Heat‘s “Galaxy 500” makes the nut.

Have a great weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow for more of teh awesome.

Saturday Matinee – Country Dick Montana Tribute, The Blasters, Levi & The Rockats, The Reverend Horton Heat, Johnny Carroll & His Hot Rocks

Saturday, 23 July 2011

Nice tribute to the late Country Dick Montana at The Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA, November 2010. From the Utoobage:

Dave Alvin sings the song “Beat Generation“, and is joined by members of the Beat Farmers, Candy Kane, Peter Case, Mojo Nixon, Cindy Lee Berryhill, and others…

Here’s Dave Alvin & The Blasters with “Marie Marie.” I saw them at the Whiskey in 1980.

Another band from the punkabilly scene: Levi  & The Rockats on the Mike Douglas Show, 1979. (That hepcat on bass is hilarious.)

Reverend Horton Heat’s “Psychobilly Freakout.” [Don’t watch if you’re epileptic…]

Johnny Carroll & His Hot Rocks “Rockin’ Maybelle” is the real deal from about 1957.

Too hot to handle and too cold to hold. Those should keep you jumpin’  jivin’ and wailin’ for a while. See you back here tomorrow.
