Saturday Matinee Pre-Halloween Edition – Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Koffin Kats, Zombie Ghost Train, and The Ramones

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis Durham are a quirky group of siblings from London who play a mix of R&B, blues, soul, punk, rock and roll, and West Indian music.

Koffin Kats started as a Detroit bar band in 2003, hit the psychobilly circuit, released several records and changed lineups over the decades.

Zombie Ghost Train (ZGT) were formed in Sydney as a gothabilly/psychobilly/horrorpunk group in 2002. In 2008, one of Sydney’s city guides, TwoThousand, called the band, “Australia’s best kept secret… These mortuary musicians are the best thing psychobilly has seen since The Cramps.” They are now defunct.

The Ramones. In 1989, fiction author Stephen King, a huge Ramones fan, invited the Ramones to his Bangor, Maine home as they played in New England. During the visit, he handed Dee Dee Ramone a copy of his Pet Sematary novel, and the bassist retreated to the basement. One hour later, Dee Dee returned with the lyrics to “Pet Sematary“.

My favorite time of year is upon us, when the sun stays low, shadows grow long and colors become more vibrant. Perfect days to contemplate leaves and dogs while sitting you-know-where… on the porch. See you around whenever.

Saturday Matinee Halloween Edition – The Ramones, Sally Cruikshank & Oingo Boingo

First recorded in 1976, The Ramones‘ I Don’t Wanna Go Down To The Basement is sort of appropriate.

Sally Cruikshank‘s animations are Betty Boop on acid.
Face like a Frog (1987) includes the Cab Calloway-esque song Don’t Go In The Basement (starts at 02:26 ). In 2017, Cruikshank herself added this to the YouTube comments:

“Danny Elfman composed the track for this film. Period. Copyright mine. Then a year or two later I gave his agents permission to include it on a compilation LP, I guess put out by [David] Geffen. Now they claim I got the music from the album or something. They’re wrong. My film came first. My husband’s going to get into it with Geffen.”

Oingo Boingo was a standout band of the 1980s, combining ska, punk, jazz & rock, and Dead Man’s Party became a Halloween party standard. According to Wikipedia:

The lyric, “I hear the chauffeur coming to my door / Says there’s room for maybe just one more,” is a reference to “The Bus-Conductor,” a short story by E. F. Benson about a hearse driver, first published in The Pall Mall Magazine in 1906.

Saturday Matinee – The Birds, The Ramones, The Lovell Sisters & The Reverend Horton Heat

The 2nd vid provides the soundtrack for the 1st. View the 1st while listening to the 2nd.

The flocking grackles(?) were recorded in a Walmart parking lot somewhere in Texas.

The Ramones covered the Trashmen righteously.
The latter took their name from a 1961 song by Kai Ray (aka Ray Caire) “Trashman’s Blues.”

The Lovell Sisters play roots-country/bluegrass, and that vid is from 2009. 2/3rds of The Lovell Sisters comprise Larkin Poe, and they just released their 5th studio album.

The first recorded (and published) version of “Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed” was by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927, but the origins of the hymn are unknown – it may date to 1600s England.

Apparently the Reverend Horton Heat got a Whole New Life in 2018, two full years ahead of the rest of us.

Saturday Matinee – Thomas and Brian Owens, Barbara Lynn Ozen & Clarence Gatemouth Brown (Plus Rare Damone Ramone Audio)

Such a pretty cover of Sam Cooke’s 1964 classic “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Brian Owens and his father. (Cooke was singing about the Civil Rights Act and the repeal of Democrat Jim Crow Laws. The white people in that audience are embarrassing to watch.)

Barbara Lynn Ozen cranked some cool Ray Charles, left-handed, on a 1966 TV show called The !!!! Beat.

Here’s a cool convergence. The house band for The !!!! Beat was led by Clarence Gatemouth Brown.

Brown was one of those rare musicians who could play the hell out of a 16d nail if you told him it was a musical instrument, and he had one tight band.

This is a “found” recording ostensibly from Damone Ramone‘s only public performance (Burma, 1979) performed on sewing machines, and sent to us by the 5th Ramone himself.

Saturday Matinee – The Sounds of Life, Back of the Mike 1938, RARG, Buzzchopper & The Ramones

The “music” is irritating as hell, but with the videos it becomes awesome. If I embedded it correctly, it should play 13 short clips in sequence, and you can jump to the next one if you wish.

Old radio shows used similar sound effect techniques.

Also note that the vid was a GM-sponsored short, so the good guys catch the bad guys in the end because the good guys are in a Chevrolet and the bad guys are only on horses.

Buzzchopper‘s other stuff sounds like Surf Ramones to me, and they opened for Mink Stole in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 2010. Last time I passed through Harrisburg, you couldn’t buy beer or wine in a convenience store or in a supermarket, and that means that something’s seriously wrong with that place.
