Saturday Matinee – The Birds, The Ramones, The Lovell Sisters & The Reverend Horton Heat

Saturday, 13 June 2020

The 2nd vid provides the soundtrack for the 1st. View the 1st while listening to the 2nd.

The flocking grackles(?) were recorded in a Walmart parking lot somewhere in Texas.

The Ramones covered the Trashmen righteously.
The latter took their name from a 1961 song by Kai Ray (aka Ray Caire) “Trashman’s Blues.”

The Lovell Sisters play roots-country/bluegrass, and that vid is from 2009. 2/3rds of The Lovell Sisters comprise Larkin Poe, and they just released their 5th studio album.

The first recorded (and published) version of “Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed” was by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927, but the origins of the hymn are unknown – it may date to 1600s England.

Apparently the Reverend Horton Heat got a Whole New Life in 2018, two full years ahead of the rest of us.

Have a great weekend folks, now that our keepers have generously returned a bit of freedom. I’m gonna get a haircut and eat cheeseburgers, and I dare anyone to stop me. See you back here tomorrow unless the apocalypse is expedited.

Saturday Matinee – Thomas and Brian Owens, Barbara Lynn Ozen & Clarence Gatemouth Brown (Plus Rare Damone Ramone Audio)

Saturday, 25 January 2020

Such a pretty cover of Sam Cooke’s 1964 classic “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Brian Owens and his father. (Cooke was singing about the Civil Rights Act and the repeal of Democrat Jim Crow Laws. The white people in that audience are embarrassing to watch.)

Barbara Lynn Ozen cranked some cool Ray Charles, left-handed, on a 1966 TV show called The !!!! Beat.

Here’s a cool convergence. The house band for The !!!! Beat was led by Clarence Gatemouth Brown.

Brown was one of those rare musicians who could play the hell out of a 16d nail if you told him it was a musical instrument, and he had one tight band.

A TACKY RACCOONS EXCLUSIVE

This is a “found” recording ostensibly from Damone Ramone‘s only public performance (Burma, 1979) performed on sewing machines, and sent to us by the 5th Ramone himself.

Have a great weekend folks. Stick around for more stuff.

Saturday Matinee – The Sounds of Life, Back of the Mike 1938, RARG, Buzzchopper & The Ramones

Saturday, 24 November 2018

The “music” is irritating as hell, but with the videos it becomes awesome. If I embedded it correctly, it should play 13 short clips in sequence, and you can jump to the next one if you wish.

Old radio shows used similar sound effect techniques.

“Radio is the theater of the mind; television is the theater of the mindless.” – Steve Allen

Also note that the vid was a GM-sponsored short, so the good guys catch the bad guys in the end because the good guys are in a Chevrolet and the bad guys are only on horses.

Rarg is a land so perfect that the sun never rises until it is absolutely sure that everyone is awake. It is a wonderful place where everyone loves learning and making new discoveries. Until one day, an astonishing discovery is made… a discovery that might just be a problem.”

So where do we go from here? Oh, hell. I know: a sappy cover of Santo & Johnny.

Buzzchopper‘s other stuff sounds like Surf Ramones to me, and they opened for Mink Stole in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 2010. Last time I passed through Harrisburg, you couldn’t buy beer or wine in a convenience store or in a supermarket, and that means that something’s seriously wrong with that place.

To all our frozen friends back east, awesome happens at about 1:00.

Have a great weekend, folks, and be back here for leftovers.

Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya Hot Links

That explains a lot.

Justice for Damone Ramone is long overdue.  Johnny, Joey, Tommy, DeeDee and Marky never gave their sibling the credit he deserved.

Gitcha some Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya. “I’ll kill all y’all’s ills.”

Now about those Trump Lies. They’re all lies.

Top image is a sculpture entitled Malinche by Jimmie Durham.

Born ca.1500AD, La Malinche (also known as Doña Marina) was a female Nahua from the Tobasco region of Mexico. Enslaved by the Chontal Maya, she was given to the Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés in 1519. She was reported to be a hottie, was savvy enough to cozy up to Cortés, became his translator and mistress, and aided the Spaniards in defeating the Aztecs. She’s now reviled as a traitor… to those who enslaved HER.

I do know why I have this page bookmarked, but I’m not sayin’. Honest.

A molting grasshopper with a nice soundtrack.

Saturday Matinee – Personal Hygiene, Leave It To Beaver, Ramones, DC5, MGMT

Saturday, 24 September 2011

Let’s get this one out of the way first. State of the art physics demonstration explores and remedies a common benign malady known as “poop splash.” [via].

Leave It To Beaver Beaver Beaver…

The Ramones’ “She’s The One.” Great stuff. I never understood why they never had a top 40 hit.

The Dave Clark Five‘s 1964 cover of  The Contours‘ classic “Do You Love Me” is almost better than the original. (Note that I said “almost.”)

Yeah. I miss it, too.

That makes five, and with that we’re out. Have a great weekend, folks.

As drummer for the seminal punk band The Ramones, surviving member Marky Ramone is enhancing his portfolio by marketing Marky Sauce.  It’s the loudest, fastest and most awesome pasta sauce you’ll ever see in your lifetime. Gabba freakin’ Hey!
