Saturday Matinee – Felix Semper, The Two Man Gentlemen Band, Batmobile & Hillbilly Moon Explosion

Felix Semper‘s paper sculptures are trippy as all heck, and the reason for it is even better. [h/t Suz P.]

Andy Bean & Fuller Condon, aka The Two Man Gentlemen Band, got some damn hot licks for having such clean hands.

Batmobile was founded in 1983:
After several months of covering Elvis Presley, Johnny Burnette en Gene Vincent songs, Jeroen Haamers (vocals/guitar), Johnny Zuidhof (drums) and Eric Haamers (double bass) decide to start writing their own material.
Best part happens at 1:17.

Hillbilly Moon Explosion is done with that truck but keeps driving anyway.

Okay, that’s it for now, gotta save something for then. See you tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Haruka Kikuchi & the Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band, Justin Johnson w/ Will Lee, & Los Lobos

Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band, featuring Haruka Kikuchi (aka Queen of the Tailgate Trombone) in 2017.

Justin Johnson & Will Lee cover Johnny Kidd & The Pirates‘  1960 hit. “It’s like surf rock, delta blues, and psychobilly just totally working together very nicely.” – YouTube comment

Los Lobos shook up some shakes in 2007.

Lotta stuff got shook up this week, haboobs flying everywhere, but it’s over for now. Gonna have a great weekend, hope you do also, and we’ll see you tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – A Band of Bees, The Hi-Jivers & The Future Shape of Sound

A Band of Bees got a bit of swampy jug band in their blood.

Nashville retro-rockers The Hi-Jivers, filmed in the Torremolinos hills of Spain during the 2020 Rockin’ Race Jamboree.
Dawna Zahn – Vocals
Austin John – Guitar
Hank Miles – Upright Bass
Jason Smay – Drums

Lord help me. I don’t think I’ve heard shakedown gospel this good since Sister Rosetta Tharpe. This is The Future Shape of Sound.

Gonna get hot again this week, maybe get wet, maybe not. See you back here tomorrow for an in-depth discussion, or maybe we’ll do something else instead.

Saturday Matinee – Salut Salon, Trix ‘O’ Treat & 1000mods

“We are Rockabilly & Country & Rock ‘n’ Roll band of Thailand.”

Bangkok’s Trix ‘O’ Treat has a cool mix of retro flavors with a bit of punk thrown in, and Billy Move is now my favorite song so far today. [Nice shirt at 1:09].

“Dude’s bass is lower than my parents’ expectations for me.”
– Youtube comment

Wikipedia describes 1000mods  as “a stoner metal band from Chiliomodi, Greece, formed in 2006. [..] The name of the group is a pun linked to the village in which they were formed, as ‘a thousand’ is pronounced ‘chillia’ in Greek.”

Have a great weekend, see you back here tomorrow for no reason at all.

Saturday Matinee – The Tractors, The Blue Cats & Tony Spinner

Steve Ripley & The Tractors were responsible for creating the highest selling album ever recorded in the state of Oklahoma. Ripley passed away  at his home in Pawnee, Oklahoma in 2019. He was 69

The Blue Cats – Beltane Fire hail from Southhampton, England. They morphed somewhat over the years, moving from rockabilly to psychobilly, then “ditched the quiffs and upright bass for something darker, heavier and evocative of merry old England” according to one review.

Tony Spinner is probably better known as a background vocalist/guitarist for Toto. He owns owns a 1964 Chevy SS.

Have a great weekend, busy or not, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow for, you know, whatever.

Saturday Matinee – Tribe Members Watching Polar Bears, Atomic Leopards & The Oblivions

Watching the Beeb. [Found here.]

In 2005, Barcelona rockers Santi & David Lluch formed Atomic Leopards,  and were members of  Hellbilly Club. That’s not Spanish either – I think it’s Catalan.

Don’t know if The Oblivions chose that video, but as odd as it is, it seems appropriate. (The clip is from a Brazilian game show.)

That’s it for now. Have a great weekend, stay cool, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow for more random acts of oddness.

Saturday Matinee – Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Justin Johnson & Altered Five Blues Band

Little Charlie & The Nightcats featured Rick Estrin on harp.

Justin Johnson cranked it up, floored it and blew the doors off. One of the greatest slide players around.

Altered Five Blues Band powers it up and flips the switch.

Kinda ran out of time (and steam) tonight, so I’ll make it short.
Seeya.

Saturday Matinee – SOUR, A Southern Gospel Revival, The Kentucky Headhunters & The Reverend Horton Heat

SOUR日々の音色 (Hibi no neiro)‘  video from 2009 coordinated Zoom before Zoom.

A Southern Gospel Revival updates classic gospel with amazing vocals and bluegrass.

The Kentucky Headhunters showed up on my radar long ago with the best (and only?) cover of Davy Crockett ever. Glad to see they’re still having fun.

Reverend Horton Heat tells the story before he growls out Motörhead‘s classic Ace of Spades.

Running out of useful brain cells tonight, so have a great weekend and we’ll see you back her tomorrow for no good reason at all.
