Saturday Matinee – Sand Castle, Whistling and Harpo Marx
The Sand Castle, 1977,
Loud, piercing and sharp… a whistle is hard to ignore. But whistling languages are in danger of dying out. But residents of Kusköy on the Black Sea coast still communicate by whistling. An ee sounds higher than an ah. Consonants are distinguished by changes in pitch over different intervals of time. Eskimos communicate with whistles; so do indigenous people in the Amazon, and in Europe shepherds keep boredom at bay and communicate by whistling to each other. But the world’s 70 whistling languages are slowly becoming extinct. Kusköy in Turkey is defending the tradition.

And because last night was a full moon, with a partial penumbral eclipse that no one noticed, we have these:
David Gilmore’s acoustic version of “Breathe”
Nat King Cole’s version of “Blue Moon,” and this:
I’m not sure if Harpo was self-taught, but I know that some items in his Wikipedia entry are contradicted by Groucho’s Autobiography. The story I recall (that means “I seem to remember but I’m too lazy to research it”): there was a dispute with a theater owner where the brothers were perfoming. Harpo was pissed, said he hoped the place burned down. It did, and Harpo vowed never to speak on stage again. I don’t know if it’s true, but I recall (again, that means “I seem to remember but I’m too lazy to research it”) that’s what Groucho claimed.
Have a great weekend, folks.

Saturday Matinee – Doggie Fun, Tom & Jerry, Rastaman Joe Cocker, and Dale Watson
Fetch. [via]
The original Tom & Jerry in “Swiss Trick” (Van Beuren Studios 1931) is just bizarre. Historical background at the Utoobage link.
The Great Rastafarian Idol Joe Cocker does what he does best,
Dale Watson is an anomaly. Tattooed Texan playing Nashville Johnny Cash style.
And with that we’re out. That’s it for another episode of The Saturday Matinee. Have a great weekend, folks.
Saturday Matinee – Fresh Guacamole, Freshlyground, Leon Russell & Friends
[h/t Bunkarina for finding this.]
“Pot Belly,” recorded in 2007 by South African band Freshlyground. Nice song with a cool video [via].
Here’s Freshlyground live with “Fire Is Low” from 2011.
Leon Russell celebrated his 71st birthday 2 April. From the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, here’s his take on the Stones‘ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and The Coasters‘ “Young Blood.”
The event was the first-ever benefit concert of such a magnitude and featured a supergroup of performers that included George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, the band Badfinger, Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan [Wiki].
With that, we’re out of here. Have a great weekend folks.
The .Gif Friday Post No. 273 – Disney Recycles, Baby Bulge Breakdance & The Runs
Top .gif illustrates Disney’s recycling program.
Middle is a miscarriage ready to happen.
Bottom one is my own.
Our entirely bitchin’ .gif collection is here.
Saturday Matinee – Spoondog, New Orleans Zombie Report, “The Creation” & Joe Bonamassa
Spoondog is a dog with a spoon [via].
Since tomorrow is the SuperBowl, here’s how one New Orleans reporter trolled an inebriated videobomber.
“The Creation.” Awesome hand drawn animation by Thomas Meyer-Hermann & Film Bilder. ” (Comment on the Utoobage sums it up: “It’s cyriak but drawn.”)
Joe Bonamassa‘s “Just Got Paid” at the 2009 North Sea Jazz Festival. So much groove crammed into one jam, and it’d take me too long to post all of the obvious influences. “Wheedlie-wheedlie-spoo” guitar solos turn me off because they sound silly and self-indulgent, but this ‘un is a good ‘un.
Have a great weekend folks, and I hope your team wins.
Saturday Matinee – MMA Mismatch 1998, LogoRama, Brother Phelps, The Kentucky Headhunters & Roy Buchanan
600 lbs vs 169 lbs. in a match from 1998 – 431 lbs. was apparently the greatest weight differential in MMA history. Place your bets, then hit play. [h/t garycooper]
Great animation and concept, despite the not-so-subtle message. PG13 for language & violence. [h/t Internet Septic Tank Engineer]
UPDATE – Here’s the background from Wiki:
Logorama is a 16-minute French animated film written and directed by H5/ François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, and produced by Autour de Minuit. The film depicts events in a stylized Los Angeles, and is told entirely through the use of more than 2,500 contemporary and historical logos and mascots.
Brother Phelps from 1995, with “Any Way The Wind Blows.” Naming the band after their Minister father, brothers Rickie Lee and Doug Phelps previously recorded with The Kentucky Headhunters.
“Honky Tonk Walkin’.” First I heard The Kentucky Headhunters was their electric version of Sons of the Pioneers‘ “Davey Crockett” and it cracked me up.
Bill Doggett‘s “Honky Tonk” was a classic instrumental hit in 1956 . Here’s the late Roy Buchanan‘s version.
Okay, that’s enough for today. Have a great weekend, be back here for more tomorrow.
Saturday Matinee – Slinky Workout, Eating Wood Grubs, Judex, Ruin & The Cowsills
[Found here.] And speaking of slinkys…
…be sure to watch this, especially if you’re squeamish. [via]
Apparently this was from a French 1963 remake of a 1914 film about a crime fighter who wears masks. [Found here.]
Ruin is an animated action short film set “way in the future” in a green post-apocalyptic universe. Directed by Wes Ball, who has been working in Hollywood for 8 years doing graphic work for HBO and DVD/Blu-ray featureetes. Described as his “passion project”, Ball has been working on Ruin off and on for the last two years.
[Found here.] And now we’re gonna rock.
This last one made me wanna puke, too, and I’d rather overwork a slinky, eat a giant wood grub, don a cockatiel head and ride the Road to Ruin than hear that again. Have a great weekend folks. See you back here tomorrow for palate cleansers.
Saturday Matinee – Goose Parade, Bimbo’s Initiation, Jurassic Snark, Kitty Town, Allman Bros.
[Found here.]
Bimbo was Betty Boop’s boyfriend/dog pal back when Betty was still a dog in a miniskirt. (Note that Mickey Mouse shows up to mess with Bimbo at 00:28. The Fleisher Bros. were Disney’s closest competitor in the animation business at the time.)
The Best Of Jurassic Park That You Don’t Recall. [via]
Welcome to Kitty Town.
The Allman Brothers’ “Jessica” is one of the great country rock jams. Seems appropriate, since I’ve got a bit of traveling coming up next week.
Have a great weekend, folks, and be back here tomorrow for more hot muffins from the internest.
Saturday Matinee Halloween Edition – Gawper, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Tom Waits, Rodrigo Blaas, Davy Knowles & Co.
The Gawper [via Miss Cellanea]
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins “I Hear Voices.”
Tom Waits’ “What’s He Building?” is a creepy classic.
Pixar’s Rodrigo Blass: “Alma.” (Caution: this is NOT for little kids.)
Nice jam. Albert Collins’ King’s “Born Under A Bad Sign,” cranked out by Davy Knowles, Christine Collister, Bonnie Hayes, and members of the Robert Cray Band.
Have a great weekend folks, and be back here tomorrow for more oddities.
