Saturday Matinee – Sand Castle, Whistling and Harpo Marx

Loud, piercing and sharp… a whistle is hard to ignore. But whistling languages are in danger of dying out. But residents of Kusköy on the Black Sea coast still communicate by whistling.An ee sounds higher than an ah. Consonants are distinguished by changes in pitch over different intervals of time. Eskimos communicate with whistles; so do indigenous people in the Amazon, and in Europe shepherds keep boredom at bay and communicate by whistling to each other. But the world’s 70 whistling languages are slowly becoming extinct. Kusköy in Turkey is defending the tradition.

I’m not sure if Harpo was self-taught, but I know that some items in his Wikipedia entry are contradicted by Groucho’s Autobiography. The story I recall (that means “I seem to remember but I’m too lazy to research it”): there was a dispute with a theater owner where the brothers were perfoming. Harpo was pissed, said he hoped the place burned down. It did, and Harpo vowed never to speak on stage again. I don’t know if it’s true, but I recall (again, that means “I seem to remember but I’m too lazy to research it”) that’s what Groucho claimed.

Leon Russell celebrated his 71st birthday 2 April. From the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, here’s his take on the Stones‘ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and The Coasters‘ “Young Blood.”
The event was the first-ever benefit concert of such a magnitude and featured a supergroup of performers that included George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, the band Badfinger, Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan [Wiki].

Joe Bonamassa‘s “Just Got Paid” at the 2009 North Sea Jazz Festival. So much groove crammed into one jam, and it’d take me too long to post all of the obvious influences. “Wheedlie-wheedlie-spoo” guitar solos turn me off because they sound silly and self-indulgent, but this ‘un is a good ‘un.

Logorama is a 16-minute French animated film written and directed by H5/ François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, and produced by Autour de Minuit. The film depicts events in a stylized Los Angeles, and is told entirely through the use of more than 2,500 contemporary and historical logos and mascots.
Brother Phelps from 1995, with “Any Way The Wind Blows.” Naming the band after their Minister father, brothers Rickie Lee and Doug Phelps previously recorded with The Kentucky Headhunters.
“Honky Tonk Walkin’.” First I heard The Kentucky Headhunters was their electric version of Sons of the Pioneers‘ “Davey Crockett” and it cracked me up.
Bill Doggett‘s “Honky Tonk” was a classic instrumental hit in 1956 . Here’s the late Roy Buchanan‘s version.

Apparently this was from a French 1963 remake of a 1914 film about a crime fighter who wears masks. [Found here.]
Ruin is an animated action short film set “way in the future” in a green post-apocalyptic universe. Directed by Wes Ball, who has been working in Hollywood for 8 years doing graphic work for HBO and DVD/Blu-ray featureetes. Described as his “passion project”, Ball has been working on Ruin off and on for the last two years.
