Saturday Matinee – Salut Salon, Trix ‘O’ Treat & 1000mods

Wikipedia describes 1000mods  as “a stoner metal band from Chiliomodi, Greece, formed in 2006. [..] The name of the group is a pun linked to the village in which they were formed, as ‘a thousand’ is pronounced ‘chillia’ in Greek.”

Feng E‘s father threatened that he’d never play LEGOs with the 5 year old again unless he learned to play ukelele. Cruel dad IMO, but the kid is amazing.

I’d heard MGMT before, but I didn’t know their name. I kind of like the sound of this one (The Monkees meet The Amboy Dukes) and the vid is quirky. Their song Time To Pretend is one of my favorites, but I get a bit choked up when I hear it.

Saturday Matinee – Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks

Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks had an unusual sound for a band based in San Francisco at the peak of the psychedelic music era. From an obit in the New York Times 7 February 2016:

“He came to call his music “folk swing,” but that only hinted at the range of influences he synthesized. He drew from the American folk tradition but also from the Gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt, the Western swing of Bob Wills, the harmony vocals of the Andrews Sisters, the raucous humor of Fats Waller and numerous other sources.”

Hicks was still performing up until his demise at the age of 74.

THAT is the prettiest (and only) cover of Tom Waits‘ classic “The Piano Has Been Drinking” I’ve ever heard. The backup vocals are sultry, and note the subtle hat-tip at about 03:00.

Saturday Matinee – Hornet Nest Eradication Fail, Tom Sitter, Kenneth White, The Avett Brothers & The Magnetic Fields

A Peavey amp, a Gibson, Black Sabbath, a Roman Candle, a hose and a folding yard stick is no defense from hornets. The part where he says, “Hold my beer,” is missing from the video.

Redditor Kathy Sitter very proudly posted a video of her 93-year old grandfather Tom Sitter telling an absolutely hilarious story to a very responsive audience during The Moth in Madison StorySLAM at the High Noon Saloon in Wisconsin. The theme of the night was “Love Hurts”, so Sitter spoke about his valentines from 1933, earning him a first-ever perfect score.

Kenneth White spent over 5 years building a replica wild west village from the 1880’s right in his backyard. White built everything from scratch including a saloon, a church with beautiful stained glass windows and an old-fashioned western jail complete with a prisoner in the bed.

The Avett Brothers got the licks, and they proved it at Knoxville’s Tennessee Theater in 2015.

Bunkessa ran off to see The Magnetic Fields last night. The music isn’t quite my can of beer, but the animation is fun.

Saturday Matinee – Rowan Atkinson, The All Night Long Blues Band, Samantha Fish & Satchmo

Rowan Atkinson plays air drums with brilliance.

The All Night Long Blues Band at The Cat Head Store in Clarksville Mississippi, 2013. There’s something both absurd and awesome going on there, and I like it.

This one’s a jawdropper. Samantha Fish kills it on a 4-string cigar box guitar. From Wiki:

During the summer of 2013, Fish was called up on stage to play with a skeptical Buddy Guy who was so impressed with her playing on the guitar, he declared with a beaming smile to his audience, “When this kind of shit happens, I’ll play all night!”

Saturday Matinee – FAIL fail, Original Star Trek, Robert Klein, Friends of Distinction, Cornelius Brothers, War

I might have posted this before, but Robert Klein was truly funny occasionally. If anyone has a clip of his classic “I Can’t Stop My Leg,” lemme know.
