Saturday Matinee – The Drink, The Fly By Night Rounders (w/ The Spoon Lady), Mick Wigfall & The Toxics

“After a little more than 2 months of work here it finally is! ‘The Drink’, a short film that’s 100% CGI. […] I really tried replicating the look of old 60s film photography and the almost dreamy Hollywood feel. I spent a lot of time researching lenses, different characteristics, how old 90s movies where filmed, how traditional film reacts to certain conditions, etc, and I’ve really learnt a lot during this whole process.”

William Landgren is 14 years old.

From the streets of Asheville NC, the Fly By Night Rounders  have an interesting bluegrass / country blues style, and The Spoon Lady has a fascinating life story.

Mick Wigfall & the Toxics are a European power trio that most in the U.S. (including me) have never heard of – details at the link – and that’s a very nice 1955 Chevy Bel Air in the vid.
The band consists of

Sébastien “Seb” Ailhaud – guitar.

A combination of Louis Prima, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Chubby Checker and Joey Dee, Si Cranstoun arrived on the London scene in the early 1990s to keep the ’40s to ’50s rock n’ soul music styles alive.

Saturday Matinee – Byrd Theater PSA, John Fred & His Playboy Band, The Tractors & Tom T. Hall

The Byrd Theater in Richmond, VA has played the same PSA before every movie since the early ’80s, and the audience recites every word along with it. From the comments:
“Wow, takes me back. the crowd participation was one of the best aspects of this PSA, a whole theatre saying “sssssick!” was amazing.”

According to John Fred & His Playboy Band,  Judy had cantaloupe eyes. (The color version of this 1968 promo video was poor quality, so the guy who posted it converted it to black and white.) The song was co-written by baritone sax player Andy Bernard and lead singer John Fred Gourrier, both of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Bernard pawned some memorabilia on Cajun Pawn Stars (2012, Season 2, Episode 14).

Mama’s little baby goes trippin’ in the kitchen with a different take on the traditional folk song by The Tractors.

“The Story Teller” Tom T. Hall, best known for Harper Valley PTA, passed away yesterday at the age of 85. R.I.P. to a great songwriter.

A lot of disturbing news flying around these days, but we’ll get past the insanity somehow.   Meanwhile have a great weekend, cherish family and friends (except for, um, you know) and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Jerry Jeff Walker & The Stones

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis Durham are a quirky group of siblings from London who play a mix of R&B, blues, soul, punk, rock and roll, and West Indian music. This one sounds a bit swampy to my ear, and their version of Polly Put Your Kettle On is a good ‘un. More about them here.

Jerry Jeff Walker (1942-2020) in Austin, Texas, 2014. He had a successful run in the 1970s and never stopped having fun. (Anyone who can write a song about relieving yourself in the breeze has my vote.)

This obscure band from the UK has great potential, but damn are they ugly. Cool song, though.

Ry Cooder, one of the greatest slide guitar players ever, paid tribute to Mooney in 2018.

Let’s stay with the slide. Bonnie Raitt & John Lee Hooker (1912, 1915, 1917, 1920 or 1923-2001) got down and dirty in 1991.

Saturday Matinee – Otis Rush, Dale Watson and Fred Wesley & The New JBs

I went downstairs, made a cup of coffee, had a chat with the neighbor, took the clothes in, came back up to my laptop, and he was still holding the first “Well”.

Otis Rush (1934-2018) plays Willie Dixon‘s classic I Can’t Quit You Baby. Can’t confirm the date or show of this vid.

Dale Watson, keeper of the true country music flame and the Memphis sound (despite hailing from Austin) is right up there with Johnny, Willie & Waylon – and a lot of others.

Saturday Matinee – Textron ARV, Malford Milligan, The Brothers Osborne w/ Darius Rucker & A Thousand Horses, and Thee Sinseers

That’s some serious Black Mirror stuff.

The Malford Milligan Band with Jeff Plankenhorn (I think) circa 2011. Can’t verify the the others.

“We had so much fun backstage during our last jam video that Darius Rucker decided he didn’t want to be left out…so we made another!” Whole buncha peeps in that one: The Brothers Osborne, Darius Rucker and A Thousand Horses. BTW, that’s a Doc Watson song.

Joey Quinones & Thee Sinseers‘ chicano R&B gets me every time. Reminds me of so many things long ago and far away. Hard to find the band lineup, but that’s Adriana Flores (of The Altons) on vocals.

The Black Keys are still around, still doing what they’re best at. This is an unusual take on the blues standard Crawlin’ King Snake (first recorded by Big Joe Williams in 1941, but it goes back decades earlier).

When Rivers Meet is a blues/roots rock 4-member “duo” from London. Good tough stuff, they got the edge. Looks like a good band to keep an ear out for.

I’d heard MGMT before, but I didn’t know their name. I kind of like the sound of this one (The Monkees meet The Amboy Dukes) and the vid is quirky. Their song Time To Pretend is one of my favorites, but I get a bit choked up when I hear it.

Saturday Matinee – Unknown Hinson, Little Feat & Alan Mirikitani

Those piqued my interest, so I dug further. Because I had to.

The Utoobage algorithm said I should check out Stuart Daniel Baker, aka Unknown Hinson, so I did. Don’t dismiss him. He’s got some serious guitar chops, and Ugly Things is the finest love ballad I’ve heard in hours. (Not only that, but the grandson of Hank Williams (Hank III) has an image of Unknown Hinson tattooed on his forearm.)

Little Feat was never easy to categorize, but this one’s kinda swampabilly with some big band thrown in.

Alan Mirikitani (1955-2015) was a classic bluesman from L.A., and fronted the band BB Chung King & The Screaming Buddaheads. Used to hear them on the radio, never got to see them live. He was in the recording studio when he died of a heart attack at the age of 60.
