Saturday Matinee – The World’s Largest Laser Gun, Oorutaichi, The Heavy Heavy, and St. Paul & The Broken Bones

World’s Largest Laser Gun (2018) by Corridor.

Oorutaichi is a “free-form, improvisational electropop artist from Osaka. Inspired by The Doors and The Residents,” he once had a band called Urichipang, and the Utoob description (via Google Translate) doesn’t help much:

PV of “Atlantis” from the album “Giant Club” by Urichipan-gun, which has been well received by UA, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Seiichi Yamamoto, and many other people as one of the masterpieces in J-POP history.

What a laid-back groovy groove. The Heavy Heavy is “a reverb-drenched collision of psychedelia and blues, acid rock and sunshine pop” based in Brighton, UK.

Jake’s and Elmore’s long lost nephew.
Paul Janeway of St. Paul & The Broken Bones nails the Stax/Volt soul sound, while Janelle Issis makes the video even better.

Might get a haircut tomorrow before someone starts calling me “mulletman” – again. See you back here for popcicles and beer.

Saturday Matinee – Universal Everything, Felix Colgrave, Matt “Guitar” Murphy w/ Memphis Slim & Billy Stepney

Transfiguration (2020) by Universal Everything is a remaster from their 2011 original. UE is a global collective of digital artists, architects and engineers, and there’s some very cool CGI animations in their portfolio.

Donks by Felix Colgrave:
The name comes from a box of miscellaneous plastic objects my child has. Things that are not categorically blocks or figurines or anything describable. I referred to them as ‘gonks’, which was pronounced by my then-2-year-old as ‘donks’. “

Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Memphis Slim & Billy Stepney on Jazz Prisma, Brussels, Belgium (1963).
Regarding Matt Murphy, one UToob commenter summed it up:
“I’ve heard many a fine guitarist mention this guy as a major influence, from Jimmy Page to fellow blues legend Freddie King. He was Howlin Wolf’s lead guitarist before Hubert Sumlin came along, and played with Ike Turner, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Chuck Berry, Sonny Boy Williamson, Otis Rush, and of course the Blues Brothers. Underrated player.”

See you tomorrow. Have a weekend. Bunk out.

Saturday Matinee – Alfred Image Works, Pokey LaFarge & The Heavy

It’s 2150. There are all sorts of Aliens living throughout space.
Johnny Express (2014) by South Korean CGI studio Alfred Image Works.

Pokey LaFarge knows.

The Heavy from 2013. Great retro soul sound.

Had some good karma come visit in the past week: doc called and said there’s nothing important to discuss, Gord sent me some cool prints, and my workload has expanded. Then it balanced itself somewhat: a computer crash did some minor damage, and snakes ate my catalytic converter at 3am yesterday. Life happens.

Have a great weekend, and we’ll be back twitchin’ & bitchin’ tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – The Drink, The Fly By Night Rounders (w/ The Spoon Lady), Mick Wigfall & The Toxics

“After a little more than 2 months of work here it finally is! ‘The Drink’, a short film that’s 100% CGI. […] I really tried replicating the look of old 60s film photography and the almost dreamy Hollywood feel. I spent a lot of time researching lenses, different characteristics, how old 90s movies where filmed, how traditional film reacts to certain conditions, etc, and I’ve really learnt a lot during this whole process.”

William Landgren is 14 years old.

From the streets of Asheville NC, the Fly By Night Rounders  have an interesting bluegrass / country blues style, and The Spoon Lady has a fascinating life story.

“Anything that’s R’n’R is fine.”
Mick Wigfall & the Toxics are a European power trio that most in the U.S. (including me) have never heard of – details at the link – and that’s a very nice 1955 Chevy Bel Air in the vid.
The band consists of
Mick Wigfall -double bass & vocals;
John Kuriak – drums;
Sébastien “Seb” Ailhaud – guitar.

It’s a wrap. Have a great weekend, ignore the bogeymen, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow just for the hell of it.

The .Gif Friday Post No. 693 – Mrs. Kravitz, Facemorphs, Little Hoopster & Hellcycle

[Source for Mrs. Kravitz .gif is missing; facemorphs was created from a CGI demo vid in here. 3rd & 4th found here and here.]

Saturday Matinee – Pwnisher’s Render Challenge, Rex Race, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band & The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Pwnisher hosted a competition that resulted in this mesmerizing compilation of entries based on the same “simple” animation:

It’s way beyond my capabilities, and I’m surprised no one walked the poor bastard up the stairs.

Nice find, Jonco.

The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is always a fun romp, and they have a new album in the works.
Rev. Peyton – Guitar/Vocals
Breezy Peyton – Washboard/Vocals
Sad Max Senteney – Drums/Vocals

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones don’t believe in anything anymore. It’s from their 11th studio album, When God Was Great (2021).

Yep, that’ll do for now. Have a great weekend, watch out for the bugbears and we’ll throw something on the floor to kick around tomorrow.
