Saturday Matinee – Stalecracker, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Justin Johnson & Shaye Cohn

“Stalecracker” (aka Justin Chiasson) is a Tiktok legend who cook him up da cajun food, dood. He’s also a Louisiana State Trooper.

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is always entertaining (despite the shaky video).

Shaye Cohn, cornetist and director of New Orleans based jazz band Tuba Skinny, joins her dad Joe Cohn (guitar), Zaid Nasser (alto sax) and Rob Adkins (bass).

Saturday Matinee – BluesBeaten Redshaw, Dave Hole & Ruf’s Blues Caravan

BluesBeaten Redshaw on cigar box banister rail & tea spoon diddley bow (via @bluesharp). Not a lot can be found about this BB Redshaw guy, other than he hails from Yorkshire, has been performing since he was 14, and drove a 1948 Fergusen tractor from northern England to Switzerland, playing gigs along the way.

Ruf’s Blues Caravan /Blues Got Soul revue brought together Si Cranstoun, Big Daddy Wilson and Vanessa Collier to perform Sam Cooke‘s classic righteously.

Saturday Matinee – Smooth Hound Smith, Justin Johnson & Cam Cole

Smooth Hound Smith were an Americana duo comprised of Zack Smith and Caitlin Doyle-Smith; their sound reminds me of Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks. After ten years of performing and recording, they closed up shop during The Great Covid Lockdown.  Apparently Z.G. Smith is now back in business.

Justin Johnson‘s unusual cover of Howlin’ Wolf fits my mood.

Cam Cole, busker, bluesman, rocker, recording artist, and “the most impressive one-man band you will ever see” has a new EP out, but this one is still my favorite.

Saturday Matinee – Propellerheads w/ Shirley Bassey, Harry & The Howlers, and (the other) Roy Rogers

Propellerheads, with Shirley Bassey, the Welsh vocalist known for her renditions of themes to three James Bond movies.

“Propellerheads were a British big beat music band, formed in 1995, from Bath made up of electronic producers Will White and Alex Gifford. The term ‘Propellerhead’ is Californian slang for a computer nerd, and when Gifford and White heard a friend from California drop this into conversation, they thought it the perfect name for their band.”

From Birmingham, UK, Harry & The Howlers features what Harry (Haley) Jordan calls “sleaze-fuelled rock and roll.”

Roy Rogers is one of those guitslingers who doesn’t need a backup band to sound good, but give him one and the results are amazing.

Saturday Matinee – Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Leo P & Jeff Beck w/ Imelda May

I get the grins whenever I hear The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Don’t let the silly stuff distract you; The Reverend has some killer chops.

Leo Pellegrino (of Too Many Zooz & Lucky Chops) really blows it in 2017 and breaks into Charles Mingus’ Moanin’ at about  3:14.

In 2019 Pellegrino sued  Epic Games for allegedly using his likeness when designing the “Phone it in” dance emote. “Because of his externally rotatable feet, he eventually developed his own unique dancing style and his signature and original movements – viz., the Signature Move,” reads the filing. 

Jeff Beck & Imelda May – great take on The Shangri-Las‘ 1964 breakout hit Remember (Walking In The Sand).

I hear there’s a football game this weekend, so burn your masks, fix up a batch of chili and we’ll see you tomorrow.

I asked a comely waitress, “Is this a new teaching?” She said, “There is no God but God, and Ralph Mooney is his name.”

Ry Cooder, one of the greatest slide guitar players ever, paid tribute to Mooney in 2018.

Let’s stay with the slide. Bonnie Raitt & John Lee Hooker (1912, 1915, 1917, 1920 or 1923-2001) got down and dirty in 1991.

Brazil native Indiara Sfair & Guilherme Tosin cover Robert Johnson’s Walking Blues. Sfair is/was a member of Brazilian blues band “Milk’n’Blues.”

Justin Johnson‘s axe is a shovel, and he sells ’em, too.

G.E. Smith gets all swampy and stuff with a tribute to late bassman Tom “T Bone” Wolk. Both backed Hall & Oates and were the core of the SNL Band (1985-1995).

Saturday Matinee – Captain Beefheart, BeauSoleil & George Thorogood

Complete Captain Beefheart concert, possibly in Toronto 1974 [via]. I saw CB and his Magic Band live in the early 80s at The [famous but now defunct] Golden Bear in Huntington Beach California. Bizarre tribal rhythmical poetry during his “Bat Chain Puller” tour.

BeauSoleil undated and completely awesome.

George Thorogood‘s vid from 1982 included cameos by pool sharp Wiilie Mosconi and the late great Bo Diddley.

Saturday Matinee – Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, Christopher Ameruoso, Tab Benoit & Tommy Castro with Samantha Fish

That’s Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle performing The Fiddle Player’s National Anthem in 2015(?). And yes, they got clogged by a buck dancer. “Orange Blossom Special” is probably the greatest train song ever, followed by the late Steve Goodman‘s “City of New Orleans.”

“Night Train” is a killer boogie jam by Tab Benoit, Tommy Castro & Samantha Fish recorded at The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA, 2014. Somewhere, John Lee Hooker is smiling.
