The Paladins were/are an underrated but great 3-man flat head six rockabilly band. I saw them decades ago opening for The Fabulous Thunderbirds at the original Golden Bear.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds were (and are) entirely awesome. Great lineup, including Jimmie Vaughan.

Saturday Matinee – Animals & Mirrors, The Doghouse, The Greg Johnson Set & The Fabulous Thunderbirds

Animals and mirrors [via].

Beware of The Doghouse. Been there. I overlooked the first Valentine’s Day post-marriage as I considered it to be a dating holiday. I ate damp corrugated cardboard for months [via].

The Greg Johnson Set is a band from New Zealand, sounds like a traditional Irish band, performs “People Can’t Talk In This Town” from 1992. Somehow the concept of Freedom of Speech is being quietly vanquished [via].

Lets lighten it up a tad. How ’bout some great rippin’ by Jimmie Vaughan with The Fabulous Thunderbirds?

Saturday Matinee – Tav Falco & Panther Burns, Rory Block, Don Leady & The Tailgators

Tav Falco is a punkabilly oddity who’s been around for a while.

Rory Block cooks up a big batch o’ Robert Johnson and serves it hot.

If I’m not mistaken, The Tailgators were a spinoff band featuring bassist Keith Ferguson from The Fabulous Thunderbirds back in the 80s, as if it matters. Don Leady rocks.

Saturday Matinee – American Dialects, W.C. Clark & the Fabulous Thunderbirds

American regional dialects are curious, and when I hear one I haven’t heard in a while I try to identify where the speaker grew up. If you listen closely, you can hear the ancestral accents and phrasing as well: English to the north, Scottish and Irish to the south. As for me, I have no accent, but Mrs. Strutts says I do… I sound a lot like central Ohio mixed with some faint Texan stuff. (Here’s a simple online test if you’re curious what accent mix you have.)
