Saturday Matinee – Vulfpeck, Lettuce Funk & Curtis Mayfield

Vulfpeck has a cool funk/jazz groove, reminds me of Weather Report, except these guys make ridiculous “I’m About To Pop A Nut” faces while they jam.

Lettuce [aka Lettuce Funk] combines retro funk with retro future funk, and it works.

Jump to 5:08 for the Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie / Led Zeppelin funk mashup. (I hear some of Zappa’s “I Am The Slime” in there, too.) Lettuce even had the cojones to cover Curtis Mayfield, and they did him right.

Poor video quality, but the audio is good. Here’s Curtis Mayfield’s original “Move On Up” (with German subtitles).

Have a great weekend, folks, and Move On Up wit yo bad sef. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Steel Shredder, Egg Cracker, Android 207, Tom Waits & Pink Floyd

Not sure why, but this kind of stuff fascinates me.

Egg-breaking machine complete with egg-breaking porn soundtrack found here.

I ran across Paul Whittington‘s Android 207 a coupla years ago. Seems to fit.

Tom Waits‘ self-accompanied masterpiece “Clang Boom Steam” also seems appropriate.

From the Utoobage description: “The iconic video was created by Gerald Scarfe initially as a backdrop film for when the band [Pink Floyd] played the track on its 1977 In the Flesh tour.”
From the Utoobage comments: “Imagine having to wait 40 years to watch your favorite band’s official videoclip.”

Have a great weekend, folks, and don’t forget that astronomy is gonna happen tomorrow night.

Saturday Matinee – Fool-Pitying Life Lessons, Fruit Sounds, The Beat Farmers & The HU Band

“First name is Mister, middle name is a period, last name is T” [via].

Whoa. What’s that? Click on it to find out.
(Don’t worry, it’s not an advert. – Bunk)

Fruit noises [via]. It’s what my insides sound like at 3AM after eating the good stuff at 6PM.

The Beat Farmers was one helluva fun bar band, and “Blue Chevrolet” was one of my favorite roadtrip songs. I don’t recobanize the lineup except for the Jerry Raney lookalike on vocals and rhythm guitar, and it appears to be a tribute concert at the Belly Up Tavern in 2013. The legendary Country Dick Montana passed away in 1995 while playing drums on “The Girl I Almost Married.”

Never heard Country Dick?
This one’s for you, and so is the next one.

Mongolian folk metal blues band The HU is badass killer. Nope. Not gonna mess with them at all [via].

Have a great weekend folks. See you back here after the earth rotates 360 degrees.

Saturday Matinee – Doodling In Math Class, Forklift Finesse, Vegetable Music, Funk Mashup & Lillian Reyes

That’s amazing. A cardioid is an anti-parabola. I never thought of it that way.
I used to do similar doodles, but nothing like hers. Draw a square, divide each line with dots, draw curvy lines top to bottom and right to left, then connect the diagonals and the result is a 2 dimensional wavy cloth. Or you can do dog-chase doodles to do spirals, but those need graphics to explain.

Amazing. Now I wanna see him do it with a Zippo [via].

Amazing. Now I wanna see him do it with meat [via].

Amazing. Now I gotta get up offa that thang.

Amazing R&B vocals featuring Lillian Reyes. I love this stuff.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more really important stuff.

Bonus – Old guys singing in a men’s room with great acoustics.

Saturday Matinee – Aluminum & Mercury Amalgamation, Capybara Soul & Leon Redbone

Okay. I’m impressed. The timelapse is killer.

Eddie Murphy‘s James Brown‘s Capybara Hot Tub is awesome [via].

Everybody needs some Leon once in a while, so there you go.

Have a great holiday weekend, folks, see y’all back here tomorrow.

Okay, let’s have a poll. Answers are randomized, multiple choices are allowed, all anonymous. Pick your top three, add nominations as you wish.

Holiday Fun: Cat Poop Cookies.

From the ICYMI Department:
Porch Package Theft Payback is brilliant.

The Best Christmas Song Collection ever IMO.

If that’s not The Best Christmas Song Collection ever, THIS IS.

It’s not officially Christmas until I hear this version of Leroy Anderson’s 1946 classic.

From the Fun Facts To Know And Tell Department:
The song “Christmas Is My Time Of Year” was originally recorded in 1968 by the one-off supergroup “The Christmas Spirit” which included members of The Turtles (including Flo & Eddie), The Byrds and Linda Ronstadt. In 1976, an even sappier version was recorded and released by We Three Monkees.

[Top Image: I want to believe that’s a gourd. I really do, but it creeps me right out. These Christmas Tchotckes are very nicely done, but they would have given me nightmares when I was little [via].]

Saturday Matinee – The Tractors, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Blaze Bayley w/ Michelle Sciarrotta & The United States Navy Band

The Tractors – “Santa Claus Boogie” 1995.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers – “Rock and Roll Christmas” 1997.

Blaze Bayley & Michelle Sciarrotta – “Rock & Roll Christmas” 2013.

United States Navy Band – “Dueling Jingle Bells” 2016.

Just a few days left before I have to begin Christmas shopping so posting here may be sporadic. Have a great Pre-Christmas weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow for stuff.

Some Music Just Stinks.

Nope. Not gonna touch those keys. No way.
[Found here.]

P.S. Not gonna touch this guy’s guitar, either.

Saturday Matinee – G-AAH, Billy Strings, Billy Gibbbons & Stéphane Grappelli

Aviator Amy Johnson was honored with an Underwood typewriter animation.tribute [via]. She achieved worldwide recognition when, in 1930, she became the first woman pilot or aviatrix to fly solo from England to Australia. She flew the G-AAAH Jason, a second-hand trainer airplane.

Billy Strings [h/t windbag].

Billy Gibbons with ratrods [h/t Octopus].

Stéphane Grappelli

Great early morning road trip music back when I was running early morning road trips. 1930s sunrise swing always worked for me.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow.

“Hold Still – This Won’t Hurt A Bit” Hot Links

Police Blotter: Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson says a woman dialed 911 when she heard what sounded like a violent altercation between her neighbors at a Maple Road apartment complex.

“One of the neighbors had heard somebody yelling – a female yelling … she was possibly being hit – yelling, ‘Stop! No!’” The concerned party also said that, in between shouts, she heard a repeated loud noise. And now, the rest of the story…

This interview is over.

This  town is too dark.

This database is too white.

Wipeout: The ending is awesome.

Stax Records had an amazing line up of talent.

“Lavender Blue” was recorded in 1959 by Sammy Turner, and includes the phrase”Dilly Dilly.” The poem/song dates to 17th century England.

The Evolution of The Na Na. They missed a few, but it’s still a good collection [via].

1944 vs. 2014 interactive photo collection is awesome. Click (or drag to fade) any WWII image to see what it looks like a century later. [h/t Nancy H.]

It’s only “…a group of migrants moving up from Central America towards the border with the US.” Yeah, right. You know they’re bad news when even los Mexicanos quieren que se vayan.: “We want the caravan to go; they are invading us. They should have come into Mexico correctly, legally, but they came in like animals.”
