Saturday Matinee – The Heimatdamisch, The Iguanas & Tab Benoit

Highway to Hesse? Bon Goes to Bitburg? The Heimatdamisch is pure Oberkreiner rock.

The Iguanas album Nuevo Boogaloo (1994) had some catchy tunes, this being one of them. The Tex-Mex band from New Orleans has been doing it for decades on vinyl, stage, television and movies.

Tab Benoit, live at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival 24 June 2022. Great hard driving blues. Not sure of the band lineup, unless it’s Swampland Jam.
Backing Benoit is Corey Duplechin on bass, Chip Vayenas on drums.

Long weekend for those who deserve it (like all of you reading this) and we’ll see you back here tomorrow just for the hell of it.

Saturday Matinee – Weapon Brown (trailer), Perch Creek & Deak Harp

Badass Chuck found here.

The Perch Creek Family Jug Band (since renamed Perch Creek) are four siblings plus a stray from Northern New South Wales, are currently based in Melbourne, Australia.

Deak Harp jams outside Deak’s Mississippi Saxophones & Blues Emporium in Clarksdale, Mississippi (2014). Guy got his bonafides by following James “Mr. Superharp” Cotton up and down the east coast before getting a job driving Cotton’s van (and  THIS is a Mississippi Saxophone).

Lotta things going down these days, but that’s not news to anyone. In the meantime, have a great weekend and maybe we’ll see better things tomorrow. See you then.

Saturday Matinee – Mr. Barti sings Tomatito, Messer Chups & Gary Clark Jr.

Mr. Barti performs La Voz Del Tiempo by José Fernández Torres, aka Tomatito.

Alex Mihajlovski was born in Macedonia, resides in Denmark and began designing and constructing marionette puppet “Barti” in Spain  in 1986. Apparently he adopted the surname Jørgensen.

“Barti is a complex marionette with many strings, over 40, keeping him alive. […] In 1986 Barti’s master Alex Jørgensen, started improvising with puppet building, using various materials and miniature constructions. During all this time he’s been working in the improvement of Barti, in a no-stop research of the movement complexity, which created this uncommon string puppet. Barti has been travelled all around the world, performing in many international festivals.”

From St. Petersburg, Russia,  Messer Chups is listed under vampire space zombie surf rock.
Oleg Gitaracula – guitar;  Zombierella – Bass; Rockin Eugene – Drums.

Gary Clark Jr. live at Great Stage Park, Manchester, TN, 2015.

Dang. The days are flying past; seems like I go to sleep Sunday night and I wake up the following Sunday morning. Have a great weekend, and see you back here tomorrow. Or the week after. Or both.

I Go Into Orbit, Johnny Acey (1962)John Acey Goodelock (1925-2009) was an east coast R&B singer / pianist who began recording in 1953, and also recorded as Johnny Chef, Acey, J. Acey, and Johnny Acey And His Fingerpoppers. I was unable to find the lineup for this recording; the 45rpm credits Texas songwriter LaCharles Harper and it may have been the inspiration for Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Pride and Joy.

Saturday Matinee – Pupsi, Best Coast & Clarence Gatemouth Brown

All Star (Smashmouth cover) by Pupsi & The Melons. Watch the carving & tuning process, or jump to 1:44 for the song.

I heard a song years ago, lost the title and the band name, and after many failed attempts I gave up looking.  After all these years I found it:
Our Deal by Best Coast. Very cool 1960s reverb retro sound; there’s a live version here.

Clarence Gatemouth Brown (1924-2005) was a rare talent, played multiple styles, and if you told him a 10 penny nail was a musical instrument, he could play it.

Guess that’ll do for a last-minute collection, so have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here tomorrow for more, you know, stuff.

Oh, and that song I’d been looking for since 2015? I found it here

Saturday Matinee – The Tornados, Grits & Greens, and Eric Bibb

The Tornados had a big hit with Telstar in 1962.  Their fourth single, Robot (1963) made No. 17 in the UK charts.

Grits & Greens are new on the Mississippi scene, but they sound like veterans. Formed in 2021, members are Ryann & Jesse McGhee (vocals, guitar); Kenny Paul Mann (bass, vocals); and Jackson Bounds (drums, vocals).

Born in New York, blues singer / songwriter Eric Bibb moved to Europe in 1970 and currently resides in Helsinki, Finland, with his Finnish wife Ulrika.

Guess that’ll have to do for now because I need a nap or two. See you tomorrow, rain or shine.

Saturday Matinee – Trombone Talk with Haruka Kikuchi, R.L. Boyce & friends, and The Stacy Mitchhart Band

Trombone Talk with Haruka Kikuchi (aka Queen of the Tailgate Trombone).

R.L Boyce jams with Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Australia Jones, Sherena Boyce, Randy “19th Street Red” Cohen, Dave Hundrieser, Jay Bundy Johnson, Tommy “Ribs” Hillifer and others. Filmed at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia, Mississippi, and overdubbed from the album Rattlesnake Boogie.

The Stacy Mitchhart Band – Outta Cincinnati and on to Nashville, Mitchhart preaches the roots. Great stuff.

Not much left to do but have a great weekend and we’ll see you sometime tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Girl X, Roy Head, The Black Keys & Gary Clark Jr.

Twisted clay animation by Takena Nagaona:
“I began making clay animations at high school. I’m a huge fan of horror movies and metal music. My works are often renowned for violence and gore!”
[h/t Gorehound]

Roy Head (sans The Traits) showed off his JB moves  while lip-syncing on  Hollywood A Go-Go (a Shindig wannabe) in 1965. Too bad the vid fades out before the song is over.

The Black Keys are still at it.

Gary Clark Jr. set the surf on fire in 2016 with 10-1/2 minutes of pure awesome.

Have a peaceful Easter and take time to remember what it’s all about.

Kephalonomancing Hot Links

Slummin‘, Don and Dewey (1959)Don “Sugarcane” Harris (aka Don Bowman) and Dewey Terry never had any hits of their own but others did with covers of their songs. Sugarcane Harris had particular success playing electric violin as a sideman for Little Richard, Johnny Otis, John Mayall & Frank Zappa, and in the 1980s was a member of the punk/jazz/psychobilly group Tupelo Chain Sex.
