Saturday Matinee – Stephanie Trick, Tuba Skinny, Nanook & Zappa

“Hand Full of Keys,” performed here by Stephanie Trick, is a Fats Waller composition, circa 1938. Awesome stride piano style. Although I’m somewhat ambidextrous and have a basic understanding of music theory and chords, there’s no way I could cut those chops.

Tuba Skinny is my favorite band these days.

I had a conversation with some of my co-workers recently, and the topic of Yellow Snow came up. I tried to explain Nanook of the North and failed, so we’re forced into Zappa mode.

You can find Zappa’s “Nanook Rubs It” on the Utoobage on your own, but “Deathless Horsie” is amazing.

Saturday Matinee – Halloween Pumpkin Carving, Frank Zappa & Oingo Boingo

Nice pumpkin carving tips. I use an orange Sharpie to mark the design, and carve with a serrated fish boning knife. Pre-designed push-pin patterns are for pussies, and using a Dremel is cheating big time. BTW, this is NOT how to do it.

That’s from Frank Zappa’s MTV Halloween Show 1981 at the Palladium NY. “Doreen” is classic, with doo-wop lyrics and chord patterns done in 4/4 time. “Goblin Girl” is typical FZ snark and innuendo.

The best Halloween Band (IMO) is Oingo Boingo, and they got their start as “The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo on The Gong Show. Pure awesome.

Saturday Matinee – Home Movies, Cold Water, Fabulous Thunderbirds & Zappa’s Black Napkins

Home movies – the Directors’ analysis.

Very cold water is very dense. Fishing in a frozen lake in Finland. Here’s an explanation [via]:

They have inflated their BCDs (vests) with air. This will make them float up to the ‘top’. This allows them to stand on the ice upside down. If there was no ice, they would surface. You can see when they breathe, the CO2 will float to the top (bottom) of the ice and it trapped. The wheel barrow is filled with CO2 expelled (poured in from the bucket). This makes it want to float too and hence will stick to the bottom of the ice until they dump it out, which will make it loose its buoyancy and sink to the bottom…

Happy birthday to Kim Wilson, one of the greatest blues harp blowers. Saw him with his original lineup in the early 80’s, pre-  Kid Ramos. Pure awesome then, pure awesome now. And just for the helluvit, here’ my favorite Zappa song to wrap it all up, “Black Napkins.”

Saturday Matinee – Doodling With Some Zees

Doodling in Math Class is an awesome series with great commentary. (There are more here, here and here.) I did a lot of n-pointed star studies and other similar graphics, but teh Utoobage hadn’t been invented yet to record the brilliance.

One of the great modern animators, Bruno Bozzetto has done it again.

What the heck, here’s another Bozzetto classic.  Now how do I transition from Bozzetto to a music video? …got it.
