Saturday Matinee – A Catfish, Banana Shorts, Steven Wright, Ten Years After & Edgar Winter

“We be eatin’ good tonight.” [Found here.]

Multi-tasking Bananas found here.

“I saw a sign that said, ‘NEXT REST AREA 25 MILES.’ I said, “That’s pretty big.”

Steven Wright was/is/will be pure awesome, and your pastor never has to block Wright’s commentaries from his 12 year old daughter either. Heavy duty clean comedy.

Ten Years After was (is) one of my favorite blues-rock bands before I knew what blues-rock was. Those English whiteboys played it nasty.

Next up is Edgar Winter, one of the whitest of the white boys, playing one of the biggest instrumental rock hits ever. Personally I liked his brother Johnny‘s stuff better, but so what.
Now about Rick Derringer

Okay, I’m going to roll the dice and ask you loyal followers an honest question. What was your favorite song / band when you were 20 years old? Leave your answers in the comments below. I’ll try not to cringe.

Have a great weekend, folks, and we’ll do more stuff tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Home Movies, Cold Water, Fabulous Thunderbirds & Zappa’s Black Napkins

Home movies – the Directors’ analysis.

Very cold water is very dense. Fishing in a frozen lake in Finland. Here’s an explanation [via]:

They have inflated their BCDs (vests) with air. This will make them float up to the ‘top’. This allows them to stand on the ice upside down. If there was no ice, they would surface. You can see when they breathe, the CO2 will float to the top (bottom) of the ice and it trapped. The wheel barrow is filled with CO2 expelled (poured in from the bucket). This makes it want to float too and hence will stick to the bottom of the ice until they dump it out, which will make it loose its buoyancy and sink to the bottom…

Happy birthday to Kim Wilson, one of the greatest blues harp blowers. Saw him with his original lineup in the early 80’s, pre-  Kid Ramos. Pure awesome then, pure awesome now. And just for the helluvit, here’ my favorite Zappa song to wrap it all up, “Black Napkins.”

Yeah, I may have posted that before, but so what – I like it. Have a great weekend, folks, be back here tomorrow for more fun and games.

Hot Links & The Temple Of Doom

Awesome. Jim Lovell’s summary of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission can be found here. Although Tom Hank’s movie was great, the book it was based on, Lovell’s “The Lost Moon,” is a must read.

Recently there was a clever cartoon meme called “Tetris From Hell.” Now you can play it.

TRUST

“What Once Was Lost, But Now is Found…”

Yeah, I know those aren’t the words. If I dropped my wallet in there, I’d fish it out for sure, but not this way. But a cell-phone? Amazing Grace is gonna get crappy reception from now on.

Then there’s Dad… got up outta bed with his chonies and black socks, got shoes on, and hung his daughter head first into the latrine to help her retrieve an overrated electronic device that she’s gonna put next to her mouth the first chance she gets to describe to her best Oprah-watching confidant how she stupidly mistook the cellphone for the Spiegel catalogue and it dropped into the cess and now the battery’s dead and [you go girl.].
