“Master Dali, The Principal will see you now.”

There’s nothing wrong with that student’s sketch, because it has little to do with artwork. Duplicating individual squares of a grid is a geometric exercise in hand-eye coordination and nothing more.

On the other hand, the sketch is awesome. Ignore the grid and mock the assignment. Realism is what cameras are for.

The key to drawing is to sketch what you see, not what you think you see. Forget what it is you’re trying to draw, squint your eyes and sketch out the dark spots, then add the medium spots. The white spots will figure it out on their own.

Look at a tree. It’s not a flat lollipop, and when you draw it, make sure there are holes in it for the birds to fly through.

Grampa Strutts gave me that advice a long time ago. Then he showed me this book. Download a copy before it’s gone and study it. It’s Beyond the Valley of Awesome.

Saturday Matinee – Patches The Horse, John/Lee/Pop Mashup & The Reverend Horton Heat

Meet Patches the Horse.

That’s  just bizarre, but it kept my attention for more than 15 seconds, so I’m posting the clever mashup featuring Iggy Pop and Peggy Lee. Little Willie John’s “Fever” will never sound the same. So where do we go from here? I’m stumped. Oh wait, I got it. Let’s slow it down a tad with some retroness.

It suits me, so it suits you. The Reverend Horton Heat‘s “Galaxy 500” makes the nut.

Have a great weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow for more of teh awesome.

Tired Horse

Update:

The horse, named Rowdy, fell into a sticky situation Monday when he found himself stuck in a large tire on a farm in Belington. The tire apparently holds water for the livestock, and when some local residents found Rowdy stuck, they were afraid he was going to drown. […] One of Rowdy’s owners who was on the scene, believes that Rowdy got trapped after an altercation with some of the other horses.

[More about the incident found here, via here. Tip ‘o the Tarboosh to John M. for ferreting out the story.]
