Johnny Winter, legendary guitarist and one of the most recognizable icons of Texas blues and rock passed away at the age of 70 earlier this week after a long career.
In a documentary released this year entitled “Johnny Winter Down and Dirty,” he laughed, “Made my first record when I was 15, started playing clubs when I was 15. Started drinking and smoking when I was 15. Sex when I was 15. Fifteen was a big year for me.”
According to Wiki, at age 10 he and his 8 year old brother Edgar played on local TV in his hometown of Beaumont Texas. Johnny Winter performed for an astounding 60 years, and he died while on still on tour.
RIP, Johnny. You made our roadtrips a hellalotta fun.
Ike Willis‘s version of Zappa’s “Suicide Chump” with Sarah Zimmerman. Most of her stuff is acoustic, but she’s no slouch on electric slide guitar. The last line in the song is “All you can say as you run down the street is:” and Willis cuts it off. In Zappa’s version, it transmogrifies into “Jumbo Go Away.”

Oh, man. We left this one for the last minute, and on “Talk Like A Pirate Day.” Thought for sure that there be some easy pickin’s on the Utoobage, BUT NOOO.
Our first hunt was for Steve Goodman’s classic “Lincoln Park Pirates.” No dice. Then we looked for mashups of the Disney thing, only to turn up infantile garbage. So then we hunted for the Mothership: Rum. Andrews Sisters’ Rum and Coca-Cola. Arrgh.
So we’re gonna throw the whole theme out. Screw it… the karma’s just not there. Gotta get some serious pirate jive growlin’ goin’ instead.

1973. Ugh. Rock N Roll was losing its edge, and then some unknown band like Focus got a lot of airplay, at least for a few minutes. We did our best to ignore the yodeling, except for the Popeye part. Here’s a rare live version of “Hocus Pocus,” with Gladys Knight(?!) doing the intro.
1973 also brought this to our FM converters so we could hear it on our AM car radios. Golden Earring‘s greatest hit, “Radar Love,” wasn’t their best song, but it was great roadtrip music.
1973 had THIS highlight, though: Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” (before he went weeny on us).

Johnny Winter was better at the blues, but he cranked on Dylan’s “Highway 61.” (Look for G.E. Smith on rhythm guitar.)
