Saturday Matinee – The King Khan & BBQ Show, Scone Cash Players & Clutch

Scone Cash Players is a Miami based funk jazz group led by Adam Scone on the Hammond B3. Scone is an Ohio native, and the accompanying video may (or may not) be a hat tip to the steel industry surrounding Youngstown.

Clutch grinds another one.

Past week so hot I was forced to dig out my official Steve Irwin Crikey Shorts, hose myself down and sit for hours in front of the Vornado. Thankfully, tropical storm Kay showed up and blew out the heat.  I’d forgotten how nice it is just to stand in the rain – and listen.

The Mississippi Blues Band formed in Buenos Aires in 1989. Renamed La Mississippi, they released their debut recording, Mbugi in 1993.

Saturday Matinee – Salut Salon, Trix ‘O’ Treat & 1000mods

Wikipedia describes 1000mods  as “a stoner metal band from Chiliomodi, Greece, formed in 2006. [..] The name of the group is a pun linked to the village in which they were formed, as ‘a thousand’ is pronounced ‘chillia’ in Greek.”

Funbar, Deerpeople (2013) I heard this song years ago (on Atomic Flash Deluxe Hi-Fi Radio) but didn’t know the title or the band name until recently. Formed in 2012 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Deerpeople were described as psychedelic folk rockers. One day they just stopped performing and recording for no particular reason, but reunited to officially disband in 2019.

Saturday Matinee – Cleverly Brand Alpaca Products, Marion & Sobo Band, The Mustangs, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

Digger Cleverly (frontman for the five member trio The Cleverlys) talks about his alpaca ranch.

Marion & Sobo Band does 1930s-era gypsy / Hot Club pretty well. Nice quirky video, too.

The Mustangs, is a famous western surf instrumental band from Finland. They’re so famous I can’t find anything about them.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears bring back the Stax/Volt soul sound without a Hammond B3 organ.

Love is All Right, Cliff Nobles & Co. (1968) Cliff Nobles recorded this A-side for the 45rpm, but the B-side, The Horse, was the instrumental hit. It became one of the most recognizable instrumentals ever, and EVERY high school band played it. The Horse was also the theme song for Radio Veronica, a popular dutch pirate radio station that broadcast from a ship on the North Sea in the 1960’s & 70s.
